I keep hearing about the West Wing having a live debate on their episode. Not sure if the entire episode is supposed to be live. So I thought I'd pose that question here.
If Cold Case did something live what ideas would you have for an ep?

I don't think that CC could do an entirely live episode, but I can see a partially live one. You could have the team's investigation of the cold case, flashbacks and all, for the first half of the show. This, of course, would be the taped portion of the episode. The second half of the show would have to be some sort of standoff that would keep the characters in one or two locations. For instance, something like the ending scene in Sherry Darlin' with Lilly and James would work. Or they could do a really long interrogation scene like the one between Lilly and George in Mindhunter or The Woods, but without the cutting between the scenes.
I know dramas are "single camera shoots," meaning that they shoot everything on film, take it back to an editing suite and edit the episode together. In order to get different camera angles, they have to shoot the scene multiple times from the different angles. Sitcoms, news shows, etc are all "multi camera shoots" where someone sits in a control room and punches which camera angle they want as they are filiming the episode. I would assume that shows like The West Wing that do live episodes must switch from single camera to multi camera shoots for the live ep, and thus, the location must stay stagnant. So, I guess CC would have to do the same if they decided to do such an episode. It would be very interesting and I'd love to see it!

I don't see how they could do a live ep. So many of their shoots are "on location".

Well they could have had a live episode if they let Lilly deal with the killing of George. It could take place in the Philly Homicide Cold Case headquarters.

I dont know about this. Its a lame reason really, but Cold Case just doesn't sound like a "Live Episode" show. I just can't imagine an ep like that... or why they would even do one for that matter.

Yeah, I don't really see any benefits to having a "live show". If I must be completely truthful. What's the point? They wouldn't be able to have flashbacks or music...

But that would be so campy  . Almost like a Cold Case "musical" (sorta reminds me of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical they did once--no offense to any fans, but I laughed really hard. It was kinda good in a way, but CC is an entirely different type of show). |
