fanatics on board?
I'm wondering if anyone here considers themself to be so. I've been involved in other fandoms and I can tell you there are those who are affected by certain actors.
So are you a fanatic and if so what makes you one?

Nope I don't think I'm fanatic.. I enjoy how the actors portray themselves in a story. :smile56: I feel actors are ppl too and I don't see them as anything else. :smile64:

I would have to agree with Eurache. While I'm a fan of Kathryn and Danny's, among other actors, I wouldn't call myself a fanatic. At the end of the day, I realize that they are extremely talented individuals but they are people like us all.

I'm not a fanatic either. Although I find Kathryn cute and all. I know she is taken plus, I have enough responsibilities in my own life to be a fanatic.

I'm not a fanatic either. Somehow I'm never too affected by my favorite actors and actresses, even though there's some I really admire. I get kind of affected by the tv shows though. Sometimes I forget those characters are not real and need to fight my way back to reality. Which, I guess, is also a showcase of the actors' and actresses' talent.

I think Kathryn is extrememly talented and adorable, and she seems like an honest, good, sweet, and caring person. But, I wouldn't consider myself a fanatic. I admire her greatly for forging through and making it in a business that is incredibly hard to break through. I've always tended to look up to women who were able to do this and who also have a strong sense of self - Kathryn seems to have both. But at the end of the day, we're all still people and only human. Like R2K said, I think I'm probably too busy with things in my own life to be a true fanatic of anyone's.

I looked up fanatic:
A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.
Would that be like when I keep bumping that thread to vote for Kathryn? Would that be fanatical? :smile6: :smile64:

I am certainly a fan of Kathryn's, but I'm not a fanatic. At least, I don't think I am. (Haha, some of my friends may disagree with me though.) Like a lot of people have already said, I've got way to much on my plate to even think about being a true KM fanatic.
That's the one of the things I think that would be scary about being famous. Having a fan get a little too invested, and possible acquiring a stalker or two..... no, I think I'll stick with just being me, and wishing I was famous. Haha, there is no harm in that!

I agree with all of you who've said you're fans but not fanatic. I'm like Tati, I get much more invested in the shows and characters than the actors--it even annoys me sometimes when the actors give too much to talk about and it eclipses their character (not KM's case, of course). I do find KM to be an exceptional actress and very level-headed and smart, all good qualities, of course. But I wouldn't write her a letter or chase after her for an autograph, and while I enjoy watching her interviews, if I miss one it's not as terrible as missing an episode.
Let's just say I quietly send her encouraging thoughts from a distance. :smile67:

I don't think I could do what I do without being a fanatic. And is "obsessed" really such a dirty word?

Ahem. But seriously, think about this:
If you approached 1,000 people on the street, and asked them, "who is Kathryn Morris," probably less than 50 would be able to ID her as an actress, and maybe 5 of those could name a TV show or movie in which she's appeared. Now how many of those would post on a message board or download videos of her interviews?
I know people who follow the Packers who proudly badge themselves as fanatics... I think it should be OK to be a KM fanatic (we just need a cool name for ourselves.)

Good point, irishkale! I wish the word "fan" weren't an abbreviated version of "fanatic," because I would definitely consider myself a fan.

You bring up very good points irishkale. I think the whole thing weighs on the connotations of the words "fanatic" and "obsessed." Both seem to have negative connotations because they conjure of thoughts of scary, stalker "fans." As you pointed out, it is perfectly acceptable (in society) to be a "fanatic" of or to be "obsessed" with a given sports team, but for some reason, the same is not true when it comes to television programs and actors. It's like a weird double standard. I watch a lot of different television shows, yet I only visit two of the shows' fan message boards. Out of those two, this is the only one in which I post. Now, reasons for this vary, everything from I like the people and environment on this board to the fact that Cold Case is my favorite show. My family watches CC as well, yet they haven't even visited the CBS site, let alone any others on the net. They all consider themselves "fans" of the show, though. This begs the question, if I take the extra step and actively seek out info on the show/cast and participate on this board, then am I actually a "fanatic?" Hard to say because it goes back to the negative connotations, and I know I am not that.

Both good points. That, I guess, is the question for today. Is being a "fanatic" a bad thing? And is it really a bad thing, or does it just sound bad (for whatever reason)? Where exactly do we draw a line between being a fan and a fanatic? Or is there one at all? I think i just proposed more questions than answering the ones that we already have!
:smile66:
I suppose I consider myself to be more than a fan. Whether or not that is fanatical, is really up to you. I devote a lot of time to this message board and my own, which is not something that everybody does like we all do here. But on the other hand, I also devote a lot of time to my own personal websites (MySpace and sites like that). So does that mean anything (like am I a fanatic of...myself? Does that even make sense?), or is it just surfing the web? Its up to us to decide.

Well here's my two more cents. I'm at this board almost daily unless I have a power outage or internet interruption or a computer crash. I've learned alot about message boards since this place began. I watched all but two episodes last season but caught the two I didn't see in reruns but that's to keep up with the board. I might not have gone back to watch the two I missed in that case.
I'm not one to be interested in the actors r/l although if they tell us in an article we happen to post that's fine. I'd never write to them, I'd never try to get their autograph if I saw them in r/l. Most likely I may just not even think it's them, I'd probably think something more like: "Oh he/she looks like someone I've seen". :smile21:
So am I a fanatic? :smile10: I think I was a fanatic of the Monkees back in the 60's when I was a kid. I'd run to the candy store everytime I had change and got the bubble gum cards that on the backside was a part of a puzzle for a larger picture if you bought them all. I'd buy magazines and cut out the pics and paste them all over my room. I'd make scrapbooks of pictures and I didn't dare miss their tv show. I also got several of their albums and played them over and over and over day in and day out. Was that fanatic? I never met them or went to their concerts or wrote them a letter or wrote for an autographed picture. Maybe I was a moderate fanatic then. :smile34:

Irishkale - You raise very good points as has everyone else. I too am on this board and other boards I moderate every single day except when I'm on vacation. I do it because I am a fan of the show or actor and it is fun but if it were all to end tomorrow because I lost my internet connection, then I would be sad but not the end of the world for me. Another way I look at it, I am a fanatic for chocolate and ice cream. Can I live without them. Sure, but it would be VERY difficult. Can I live without seeing Cold Case. I'd miss it tremendously but I would survive. That's how I put it into perspective.

I'm not sure if you all will share my definition, but, for me, a "fanatic" is someone who basically lets his/her obsession run his/her life. Like they stop doing other things, important things, and set aside their loved ones for the sake of this obsession. Kind of like an addiction. If you think of it that way, it IS kind of sick.
Now, if you just really like a show or actor (as most of us like Cold Case), look forward to the episodes and hate it if people phone you in the middle of them, tape them, read articles about them, but still manage to get on with your life and other things... then it's perfectly healthy and normal.
I'm conscious I don't really know any of you (except from the board), but I'm pretty sure none of you fit into this "sick-fanatic" category. You all seem to lead pretty normal lives.
