Season 2 Ratings - ADDED SOME S1!!

Since the other thread got pretty long, I decided to go ahead and start a new one for Season 2. I'm going to do this one a little differently. This time, I'll keep a list on this first post with each episode and its overnight rating and share, its total viewers, and how the episode ranked overall for the week. All the overnight info will be from Zap2it[/b][/url], and the weekly ratings will come from USAToday[/b][/url]. I'll post the overnights on Mon, and the weekly info on Wed. I figured this would work better as a reference throughout the season to watch how CC does.

I saw this prelim bit from zap2it on CC's total viewers the other night. I'll post the final numbers when they come out tomorrow.

At 8 p.m., "Cold Case" opened its second season on CBS with about 15.5 million viewers, close to the 15.8 million that watched the series premiere last year. It won its hour overall, but "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" held a sizable advantage in adults 18-49, averaging 5.7 to CBS' 3.7.

Wait, im a little confused. In the first post it says that 'The Badlands' had 15 million watchers, but in that article it says it had 15.5 million. am i missing something?

TruBlu - the article is based on something called "fast national ratings." They're not as accurate as the final numbers that come in on Tues evenings for the entire week. Often times, the fast nationals are higher than the actual numbers. I was confused too, but then I read all of this somewhere.

Warning, somewhat of a rant regarding the current late starts due to football.....

Well, it finally happened. ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ExM:HE) finally over took Cold Case this past Sunday night. I've been watching this match-up unfold this season, and ExM:HE has been creeping up on Cold Case these first few weeks. Granted this was a special 2 hour "sweeps" episode, but I'm still not thrilled about this new development. I strongly believe it's a direct result of the constant football coverage spilling over every Sunday.

How is an audience suppose to watch a show they can't find? I have to think (and mind you, this is just a guess) that the main audience for ExM:HE is female. Men probably watch the NFL and just keep CBS on the rest of the night. Women are not as likely to watch the NFL (although many do), so when the clock strikes 8pm (or in the most recent case 7pm), they flip on CBS and see 60 minutes. Then, they most likely flip it over to ABC and watch ExM:HE. Once you start watching, you're less likely to keep searching for CC b/c you're hooked on the emotional stories on ABC. Last Sunday, CC didn't start until 8:40! That's an hour and 40 minutes into ExM:HE! By this point, people are most likely to just keep watching ABC, and catch CC in reruns. In fact, I saw some prelim numbers from Sunday night, and it looks like ExM:HE is going to end up with 20 million viewers this past week!

It's not all doom and gloom, though. Football has to end sometime. No seriously, CC's numbers are up over 8% from last season according to thefutoncritic.com. So far, it's averaging 15.56 million viewers (as of "Who's Your Daddy?" - final numbers aren't in yet for "The Sleepover" as of this post) compared to around 13-14 million last year. I'm just wondering what will happen next weekend when ExM:HE goes back to its normal hour long format. I'm sure we'll have the football problem once again, but up until last Sunday, CC still beat ExM:HE even when football ran over.

Another thing to note, there was a huge spike in viewers for "Who's Your Daddy?" I can't say for sure, but I think this most likely had to do with the NFL game that aired leading up to prime time. It was the Patriots game, and apparently, most of the country wanted to see them lose their first game in a couple seasons. So, football running over isn't always a negative for CC. CC probably also got a push from a very highly rated edition of 60 Minutes (it included exclusive footage of a lip syncing Ashlee Simpson running off the stage after her humiliating "live" performance on Saturday Night Live).

So, I'm annoyed with the football problem. I think it ended up hurting CC last week (although I do think "The Sleepover" will end up with around 15-15.5 million viewers, which is still great). The bottom line seems to be that more people are discovering ExM:HE. I think it's a combination of the football problem and the fact that it seems to be one of those "buzz shows." I'm sure the tremendous success of fellow "buzz show" and post timeslot anchor Desperate Housewives doesn't hurt it either.

Looks like CC still had a nice week. 17.7 million viewers is great (and possibly a new record high, does anyone know for sure?)! For those who are interested, ExM:HE came in 5th for the week with 20.2 million viewers. Let's hope that now that the special 2 hour ep is over, CC will return to the top of the timeslot!

That's great news for Cold Case. Over 18 MILLION viewers. That's a lot of people tuning in and remember we're right in the middle of November sweeps. But actually, just the fact that CC is in the top 10 with all the shows out there is quite an accomplishment in and of itself.

Looks like more good news for Cold Case. According to USAToday.com, the show's audience is now up 19% from last year. It's the fourth largest gainer on television this season. Here are some quotes from the article:

CBS has few new hits, but its returning lineup has seven solid gainers, led by Without a Trace and Cold Case.

Of course, most long-running shows decline as viewers tire of them. New shows tend to attract more converts midway through their freshman year, explaining why NBC's Las Vegas and CBS' Cold Case and NCIS are showing healthy growth in their second seasons.
