Hi All I am from Australia. We are normally about a year behind the States getting great shows such as Cold Case. However, I was wondering if Cold Case has been released in DVD in the U.S yet? It is a fantastic show, and has really taken off here. No doubt us poor old Aussies will have to wait another 6 months before the second series is released. I apologise if this has been mentioned, but I am still finding my way around this place!!

Hey Campbell272 I am from Australia too. Channel 9 has really messed up this show hasn't it? We got it midway through the year, only half the season (the disco one we saw last was only midway through the season!) and episodes were missed. I have been downloading all the epiosdes I can (especially the second season) but I am really wanting to see the first season in its entirity. I guess I will be getting the DVD from the US when it comes out as we will probably not get it here seeing as it would not have been on tv yet As you can probably tell, I am really angry about this but I will stop whining now ;D Hopefully we will get re-runs *crosses fingers* over the summer like every other show!

Don't know if this means anything, but Cold Case is listed on Netflix[/u][/url]. Obviously, it's not out yet, but perhaps this means it will come out later this year. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

My experience with Netflix has been that they list sets that are yet to be announced, sometimes up to 6 months before a release is even announced. Another example is Desperate Housewives. Netflix has that listed also and there has been no mention of a release of that set except that the producers are aiming for a late summer/early fall '05 release of DH. Let's HOPE that Cold Case is on the same timetable. One other thing I found out is that Warner Brother's (Cold Case's DVD rights holder) is having their 50th anniversary on February 8th and it is felt around that time they will be making announcements of many DVD releases for the rest of 2005. My fingers are crossed Cold Case will be on that list.

The WB anniversary sounds promising Ryebeach. I can't take credit for the netflix catch. A member on the Source 1 site (message boards) posted it. I happened to see it last night.

Warner Brothers (the studio that owns the rights to Cold Case on DVD) is having a live chat at The Home Theater Forum. It was originally scheduled for March 14th but has been pushed back about two weeks to a date yet to be determined. At the time of the chat it will be possible to ask questions of a member or members of the studio about plans for upcoming titles on DVD. Perhaps we can inquire about Cold Case. I'll keep checking to see when they announce a date for the live chat. Home Theater Forum

The Warner Brothers Home Video live chat at the Home Theater Forum has been rescheduled for Tuesday March 29th from 8:00-11:00pm EST. We have to remember though that this chat not only encompasses TV shows on DVD but also films as well so there will be many questions posed to the three executives in attendance so no guarentees there will be an answer about Cold Case on DVD but I will do my best to be at the chat and if anyone else is interested in participating, here's the direct link discussing the chat and the rules and posting guidelines for it. Well I attended the live chat with Warner Brother's Home Video at the Home Theater Forum this evening. I inquired about CC on DVD and this was their response:
<Ryebeach> My absolute favorite current TV series is COLD CASE. Can you tell us when a Season 1 set of this remarkable show is planned? Thank you. DONE
<WarnerHomeVideo> We agree COLD CASE is a great show. Music issues preclude the possibility of a release at this time. DONE
I wish their answer was more favorable but it is certainly understandable that a DVD release is not imminent considering the considerable music used in Season 1. I hope the music rights issues are worked out so we can see Cold Case in the near future. Warner's was letting folks know of releases all the way into Mid-2006 for other series/films so I, unfortunately, wouldn't expect Cold Case for quite awhile. I recommend taping all episodes for now. But at least we know where Warner's stands at this point.

That was what I was afraid of with the DVD possibilities. Thank you so much for asking about it Ryebeach. What a bummer! I wonder if this is the reason that the music hasn't been as "well known" this season. Maybe the show is only accepting songs (this season) that will sign on for the DVDs as well. It's interesting though because many shows use a lot of music, but have been able to release DVDs. "American Dreams" must use just as many, if not more, songs per an episode, but it has a first season DVD collection out now. In fact, it's an extended music edition! It's a different distributor though, so that could be the difference. I'm so bummed because I've been looking forward to the DVDs for some time now. Hopefully, they will be able to work out the music issues and release the DVDs in the future.

That's stupid. Music issues. Other shows don't seem to be having that problem. Besides, Cold Case has probably helped fans gain an interest in the some of the music they might not have without the show. I've noticed that after an episode airs, the final song seems to come up on the radio more often. If anything, Cold Case should get paid for the free advertising they are giving to has been singers who may have gone forgotten without this great show. Like these singers don't already make enough money.

So I wonder if those "Music issues" they mentioned are tied to Cost, or if they have trouble getting clearances for use on DVD.
If it's cost, then they'll have to pass on the higher cost to the consumer--i.e. the CC first season DVD set will be higher priced.
I wonder, though, if the heat is on for the DVDs, will they make a judgement call and replace some songs? And who makes that call?

I'm worried about that irishkale. I would much rather pay a higher price for the original songs than have a set without them. I know that these two possibilities aren't mutually exclusive, but if it comes down to a price thing, I'd say go with the original songs and higher priced DVDs.
If it's a clearance issue, then I don't know what should happen. I'd hate to have the DVDs without the original music. In fact, I'd probably wait until the reruns start on TNT next fall and collect the episodes that way. Which begs the question, how did they get the songs for TNT and syndication use? It must be a different process.

I so agree with you guys about the music issues. I don't know if we should send letters or something to whomever's in charge of the DVD's. Maybe if we get enough signatures we can persuade them to get the rights to the original music somehow and just charge us more for them. What do you think?
Sorry, Ryebeach. Forgot to say a great big THANK YOU :bananna: for asking what so many of us wanted to know--even if the answer wasn't what we were hoping for.

I would be willing to pay the extra money to have all the songs intact. I don't purchase a lot of TV shows on DVD anyway. If they have to change some songs, they should at least leave the first and last songs of each episode intact. Any songs in between are okay although they should stay in there. But the opening and final songs are the heart of show. They can't mess with those.

I know that these two possibilities aren't mutually exclusive, but if it comes down to a price thing, I'd say go with the original songs and higher priced DVDs. I totally agree TVFan. The show just wouldn't be the same without all the original music. In my opinion, the music is just as much a character as the detectives are Which begs the question, how did they get the songs for TNT and syndication use? It must be a different process. It is a differnet process. From what I understand, rights have to be paid for original broadcast, syndication, cable, and DVD release. Understandably with all those clearances to be bought, it can get quite pricey. For whatever reason, the clearances for the DVD releases always seem to be the hold up.

Thanks for clarifying that Ryebeach. Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it all gets worked out and we get our DVDs with the original music intact. Either way, I'm definitely going to start recording the season one eps on TNT in the fall (just in case ).

I'm going to go ahead and sticky this thread since a lot of members wonder about DVDs. With the new season approaching, there will probably be new members who will be looking for DVDs to catch up. Anyway, here's a recap of this thread:
Ryebeach was gracious enough to attend the Warner Bros. Home Video live chat. He asked them about Cold Case being released on DVD, and this was Warner Bros. response:
WarnerHomeVideo: We agree COLD CASE is a great show. Music issues preclude the possibility of a release at this time.
