We cut to 2002. "Poem" by Taproot plays and Paul jogs up behind John.
Paul: John, do you know where Devin is?
John: I haven’t seen him today. He said to meet him near my house.
Paul: About what?
John: You know…it’s hard to explain. What do you have to do with it?
Paul: He’s got the same thing going with me.
John: Are you serious? I thought it was just me.
Paul: You know if this gets out, we’re both dead.
John: Nah, he wouldn’t be like that.
Paul: You don’t know Devin like I do, man. If this deal screws up…I don’t want to even think about it.
John: He better not ask me to make any more of them either…
Paul: Well the product is in great demand. Lots of people like cheap drinks.
John: Yeah, but it’s a b*tch to make you know?
Paul: Look, just figure something out before we’re both dead…
We cut to the present.
Rush: What were you making?
Paul: We were selling drinks and cocktails to school kids. Kids were getting in major trouble for all the drunkenness, one kid got suspended…it got messy. So we sold them carefully. And Devin needed some more of them, quick. John was even thinking of stopping around that point. I suppose Devin didn’t want that. You can ask him about it. But I swear I didn’t do it.
Valens: Er, thanks for your time Paul. Be sure you keep your head outta the gutter, kid.
He flashes to 2002 Paul.
Paul: I will, sir. He flashes back. Rush and Valens leave. The detectives are all at the station.
Vera: So whatta we got?
Rush: We have 2 possible suspects, Paul and Devin. Paul and John had to make alcohol for Devin, and Devin was getting mad at John. Yearbook photos show he could’ve done the kid in.
Valens: I say we have a little powow with muscleman, see if he’s the doer.
Vera: Sounds like a plan. Any idea where he is now?
Rush: Working at The Denim Club over in Schuykill.
Vera: Well then let’s go clubbin’.
We cut to the club, where Vera and Rush pull up and head inside. It’s a blue-tinted atmosphere with techno music playing. We see Devin serving drinks to a table. He flashes from his 2002 self, to present day.
Vera: Devin Crandall?
Devin: Ugh, welcome to The Denim Club, can I help you?
Rush: Actually we wanted to see if you could help us. Lilly Rush, this is Vera, Philidelphia homicide. We’re re-investigating the murder of John Parner?
Devin: I’ve been waiting for you people to show up. I was surprised you wouldn’t come when he got killed.
Vera: Got something for us?
Devin: Actually, I do. Come to the back. Vera and Rush look at each other, then follow him to the back.
Devin: I was at his house the day he died… We cut to 2002.
"No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age plays on a radio, and Devin walks in a back door. He sees Paul writing something.
Devin: John?
John: Oh god, Devin, don’t scare me like that for god’s sakes. He takes what he was writing and shoves it in his desk.
Devin: What’s that?
John: Just some uh, recipes. What do you want?
Devin: I’m here for the drinks.
John: Go check the fridge.
Devin: John, man…what’s on your arms? Are those cuts?
John: No man…these are like, uh…these are from when I got beat up the other day. Don’t worry about it…We cut to the present.
Devin: Why don’t you see whatever was in that note? If it’s still there, I mean…
Vera: I suppose this makes you think you’re off the hook. We’ll check out the note, but we ain’t done with you.
Devin flashes to his younger self.
Devin: What else do you want from me?
He flashes back.
Rush: We just want this case to be solved.
Back at the office, John’s father is there holding a piece of paper.
Rick: I heard you people were looking for a note. I have it for you.
He appears to be fighting back tears. He puts it down on the table.
Rick: It’ll tell you what happened.
Stillman, Jeffries, and the rest of the detectives crowd around the table. Rush reads the letter.
Rush: "This is from John Parner. I wrote this letter in the hopes that the first one to read it will understand what will happen in a few minutes. To Devin: I’m sorry, I’m dropping from the business. To Paul: I forgive you for the beatings. To Dad: I’m just so sorry… I have just injected myself with a poison. I’m going to go to the sign… It cuts to John, out by the sign. He hits his head and body repeatedly on it. He drops to the ground, hitting the rock and beginning to bleed. We cut to the present.
Rush: "Maybe this time, my beating will not go unnoticed. I just pray no one finds I did this to myself. Then my tormentors…the insurmountable cruelty of them will be punished. I can only hope…goodbye. - John W. Parner
"Mad World" by Gary Jules starts quietly in the background. Rush looks around, to the detectives. John’s father is crying. We cut to Mark, passing by a newsstand. He sees an article about John. He flashes to younger Mark, and then to his present self, giving a nod of appreciation.
We see Paul and Devin talking to eachother at The Denim Club. The laugh, flash to their younger selves, and flash back. John’s father is outside his house, and breathes a sigh. We then cut to Rush, who’s at John’s school. A class empties, and John comes out last. He looks at her, and smiles. He walks off, and disappears. Rush looks down. We fade to black.
The End
