Good evening everyone, This is the Byrdman just starting up this weekly thread about song guesses (I hope you don't mind, Naj!). First of all, I am not going to pretend I knew what music was playing back in 1932. I have heard from InsideR that Billie Holliday will be featured, and that makes sense. However, I am a student of the Depression, and a few thoughts have come to mind as far as songs go. This was the depths of the Great Depression, the year before FDR took office, so I have to go with an obvious choice here: "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?" - Singer unknown Also, I have found out about another song that was popular during the late 1920s before the stock market crash as well. This title still gets me to laugh every time I say it: "My God, How the Money Rolls In" - Singer unknown  Just my thoughts. Neither song will probably be there, but I like to guess. Thanks, and take care this evening, everyone.

I'm afraid I don't have any guesses for this episode. It will be very interesting to see what songs they end up using.

Seems like Cab Calloway was popular in 1932. I don't know if I know any of his stuff. But maybe that's a possibility.
You can listen to snippets on amazon.com if you search his name in music....

Was the ending montage song a real "Period Song" from the 30's, or was it a score specially composed for the episode? It struck me weird to think that the ending montage didn't have an actual "Song" for it.

I noticed this too, irishkale. I thought it was a neat effect to have just music and then include lines from the women's poetry over the music. It was different, and it worked very well. The music sounded familar, so I think it might have been a real song, but I could be wrong.

I've got to rewatch this one. I can't even remember the music at the end. Maybe it was the show's underscore. Maybe they will begin switching to that more and more.

I'm not 100% certain but I think it was an original score that was used for the closing scenes. I'm sure it must have been difficult securing period songs for this episode.

I know a bit about this...
It was original score, not a period song. This was because the director felt that he couldn't find a period song that had the right emotional feel. So he asked the show's composer to write a piece for the montage.
Although everyone seemed to think it was a good solution for this episode, it will probably remain a rare occurence.

---"It don't mean a thing" is Duke Ellington; the version from this album, Disk 1, track 18 (has music clip to confirm): tinyurl.com/dq296----The Billie Holiday song is "Trav'lin' All Alone"; Disk 1, Track 14, of this album: tinyurl.com/7fg6c---The song with Billie and Rose dancing in the club is "Nobody knows you when you're down and out", Bessie Smith; I think it's Disk 2, Track 9, of this album: tinyurl.com/dr6td
