Ok, thought this would be interesting. We've never talked about it.

Great topic Disasterfreak. I've never brought this subject up before because I don't watch reality shows. That being said, I did tune in now and again to Season 1 of The Apprentice which was good but Season 2 stank, in my opinion and I don't watch that show anymore. Other than that the only other reality show I've watched was Fear Factor, after which I couldn't eat for days so I've never done that again. It was totally gross. :yikes: I wish the networks would cut out reality shows altogether and get back to scripted shows like it used to be but so long as there are viewers for those types of shows, I guess we're stuck with them.

Still... I really wanna hear both sides of the story. Yeah, me too. I know a number of members here watch Survivor and The Amazing Race so I'm looking forward to their opinions on reality shows.

I don't watch any reality shows, but I know that my mom used to like the Amazing Races a lot. She stopped watching half way through Season 3, and the closest to a reason I ever got out of her was that the contestents were starting to being nasty to not only other teams, but also their own teammates, and she couldn't stand that.
I know that I can't stand Survivor for one simple reason: these people probably have friends, family and career, and they throw all that away just to be on a competition that is not only easy to lose, but also allow millions of people to see the most primal and ugly side of them. I just don't get it.

All I watch sometimes is American Idol--and very few times. I just can't help it, the sight of all those poor hopeful little souls crushed to the ground by four merciless judges (one of which, the British guy, I would love to throttle with my bare hands) really gets to me. I watch for a little while cuz it's fun, but afterwards so much disappointment really depresses me. Also some people sing so godawful I'm overcome with shame for them. I mean--where were their family and friends that they didn't discourage them to audition??? I sing pretty bad myself, and I'd hate it if my loved ones let me make a fool of myself. :pat:

The only reality show I watch is The Amazing Race. I LOVE The Amazing Race! In fact, I am so excited that it starts up again tonight! Yay!! Other than TAR, I don't watch reality shows. The rest just don't interest me either because I don't get the concept, they're trashy, or there is better programing (read scripted) on another channel at the same time. I have enough scripted shows to watch without adding reality shows in as well. JMO

Religiously I have watched Survivor and the AR since they first aired. I watch bits and pieces of American Idol. The rest I could care less about.
But I have to admit Survior is wearing on me and tonight the new season of The Amazing Race begins!

You know, this is gonna sound really dumb, but what is The Amazing Races? I don't think it has ever been broadcast where I live. Summary anyone? Just to have a general idea.

DisasterFreak - The Amazing Race is a competitive reality show. It pits 12 teams of two against each other in a race around the world. There are pit stops, and the last team to arrive at each of the pit stops is eliminated until the final three. Then, the final three race to the finish line. The winning team takes home $1 million!! Along the way, there are tasks, roadblocks (where only one team member can complete the task), detours (the teams choose between two tasks "each with their own pros and cons" - to quote the host Phil Keoghan), airplane trips (some teams find better flights), and many other nail-biting moments. Here's a link to the official site: The Amazing Race

I voted that they're dumb, but people seem to like them. Actually there are one or two that seem to be interesting, but it's not really the kind of show that I like. Here in Brazil we're having the 5th edition of Big Brother and I can't believe how someone watches that. Maybe it's the people they put in there - they're always so shallow and stupid.
Also, I have a hard time calling shows like Big Brother or Survivor reality shows. I mean, what are the odds that I'll ever be locked in a house with 11 unkown people, without being able to communicate to the outside world?? That's far from reality, IMO. Now, a show like The Apprentice, that's reality. Anyone who has ever looked for a job in the business world (and I have) can really relate (and learn) from what they show there. (even though I don't watch, I think it's a nice show)
