January 4, 1978
Snow is falling hard into the darkened streets. A black crow flies by crying out into the night. In one of them homes, a man and a woman are fighting.
“I am leaving, for good “the woman Alexia yells. Her husband Matt stands there “Tell me one good reason why we can’t repair our marriage”? Alexia looks at him “Sara told me that you are seeing other woman “.
At that point Matt totally explodes “I have given you everything, and you still treat me like dirt”. Alexia then pushes him away “You are not the man who I knew, you are selfish and self centered little fool”.
Outside the snow falls faster as Alexia’s body lies dead in a pool on blood. The case is filed “Doe, A”.
Present day
Lilly is reopening the case, “Alexia Doe, age 34 cause of death; blunt force trauma to the head”. Scotty winces as the she passes him the pictures “Died in New Hampshire, why is this case filed here in Philly”?
Stillman then answered the question “She was living here in Philly in 1978, but suddenly disappeared with a man named Matt”. He then went on “The community was any help, but I need you two to go undercover to solve this, we need answers immediately”.
Scotty looked at Lilly “You mean going undercover as a married couple”? The older man looked at him “The two of you will leave tonight before the snowstorm”.
Later that evening, they headed towards New Hampshire. Lilly slept most of the way, until the cold woke her up. As their car drove into darkness, the two shared a cup of coffee...
“Give me your hand Rush” he said. Lilly moved closer as Scotty slid a ring down her finger “We are now officially married undercover”. The two shared a smile before heading in the small town of Death Circle.
The town itself was just plain spooky, the building were old and worn, even the cars were too. As the officers reached their destination, an old charming home stood in front of them.
Lilly gasped as the door was opened, the place was truly a dream come true. Throughout the whole house was hardwood floor, the kitchen was big and long with a breakfast nook. Upstairs there was a huge master bedroom and another door leading to another level. As she entered the master bedroom, the room itself was nothing like she’d ever seen before.
A huge fireplace was directly across from the extra large king sized bed, a wet bar was on another wall near the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, there was a marble shower stall and an extra large whirlpool tub.
Scotty soon entered the room, grinning at the sight of Lilly in her pajamas. Her eyes were tired as she fell back onto the bed.
“Lil, there’s just a little problem” he said
Lilly opened her eyes slightly” Yeah”.
“Where should I sleep”?
He waited for her answer but she had fallen fast asleep, Scotty then lie down on the other side and fell fast asleep. Downstairs, blood dripped from the ceiling and onto the floor.
The next morning, Lilly got up and showered but scowled when there wasn’t any hot water. After getting dressed and putting the on the ring, she headed downstairs to make some coffee. Soon after, Scotty met her in the kitchen taking a cup from her.
With nothing else to do, they two sat by the fireplace in silence until there was a knock at their front door. As Lilly opened the door, Scotty wrapped his arms around her waist.
A man in his early forties stood there with his wife “You must be the new neighbors, I’m Alex and this is Kristen” he said extending his hand. Scotty then kissed Lilly “Scotty and my lovely wife Lilly” he said with a warm smile. Kristen then stepped forward “How about tonight we get together say 8pm”? “Sure” said Lilly as they watched the neighbors walk home before closing the door.
“If this is the same man who murdered our victim, why would he be living across the street” he asked. “I don’t know, but maybe we’ll get a better idea tonight” she said heading upstairs.
That night, Scotty held Lilly closer as they sat on the couch. “So where did you two meet” asked Kristen. Scotty smiled “Actually it was on a train, we shared a cup of coffee and now here we are”. Alex laughed “So how long have you two been married”? “About a month, how about you” Lilly asked. Kristen shifted uncontrollably but didn’t answer giving the impression that she was lying or hiding something.
Scotty then had this impression that there was something indeed very fishy here “I was just curious to why my house has been abandoned so long “. Alex looked at him “We don’t get a lot of people moving in to this area, and who wants to live in a house without any hot water”.
The two detectives then got up and headed towards the door, thanking their neighbors before leaving. Kristen then watched as their front door closed across the street “An affectionate couple that’s something you don’t see around here”. Alex then muttered “Those two won’t last very long here, not a soul does”.
That night Scotty sat in front of a laptop computer researching the town, while Lilly went into the basement to look for clues. It was dark and bitter; as the steps creaked as she descended onto the freezing filthy floor.
Boxes were superimposed up against a wall; one by one they were removed to disclose a door behind it. Inside there was a table was a mass of books stacked on top of it, as Lilly flipped through one of them a gold key dropped onto the floor. It was just her luck as she was picking up the key, her flashlight burned out. The basement became pitch black as Lilly took the book as something grabbed her hand.
Lilly breathed sigh of relief that it was just Scotty, he then led her back upstairs to their bedroom.
“Isn’t it strange that Alex knew this house didn’t have any hot water” she asked sitting on the bed. Scotty then handed her several pieces of paper “Alex was the owner of this house in 1978, but it doesn’t state that he was married to Alexia”. Lilly then opened up the book as small key lay in the middle “I found this while searching, there’s another door maybe tomorrow we can search together”.
The next morning, Scotty left for “work” as Lilly got into the car and headed down to the grocery store. Pushing a cart into the store, she found it to be empty. The fruits and meats looked outdated, so she settled for anything in a box. It was lucky that, Lilly knew in advance to carry only cash not credit to prevent anyone finding out who they really were.
Approaching the cashier register, the cashier made no eye contract as he rang up her purchase.
One the way out another man stopped her “Where is your husband” he asked. Lilly then answered “At work why”? The man looked stern “Alright, just don’t let me catch you alone without your husband again “.
As she drove into the driveway, and carried the bags into the house; unaware that Alex was had been watching her. An hour later, Lilly was researching something on the computer, when the phone rang.
“Don’t walk in the dark without him or else” a voice said before hanging up.
Then the lights went out, drawing up her gun to see that no one was there. This left Lilly wondering what the caller meant by that. Nevertheless, she was looking forward to some quiet time before Scotty came back from an FBI office.
As the water cased out in the bathroom, Lilly simmered up some hot water on the stove. Then she lit some candles and poured the water into the bathtub. Settling into the bath, her body relaxed as her mind drew a complete blank. A while later, she opened her eyes to see blood saturated the water as Lilly hysterically put on her clothes. Scotty then kicked open the door only to see her standing there alive.
“Lil, are you alright” he asked. Still quivering she nodded” look up there into that hole, there’s something up there”. Scotty then led her out of the bathroom and sat her down in front of the fireplace. He then draped a blanket over her “There is a lot of blood downstairs, someone doesn’t want us here”.
Meanwhile Alex was having a little meeting with some neighbors, “That couple across the street, is not to be trusted”. Another neighbor Sally scowled” Get over it, I think the two of them make a cute couple”. Kristen then looked down “Really, this morning I saw Lilly driving by herself with out him, she’s going against ever rule in this town”. Rich the spoke” Let’s throw a little get together, and see how they are without each other”. Alex then got up “all is agreed, Rich you keep an eye on the blonde make sure she doesn’t break any more rules, I will take care of that husband of hers “ .
As Lilly got the mail, Scotty came outside, Both noticing a woman and a man talking, Scotty then leaned forward and kissed her on the lips as he led her back into the house. Looking at the one of letters, it was an invitation to a party tonight.
“I’ve heard you two have been married for only a month, so what about kids” asked Sally. Lilly smiled” Actually we really haven’t thought about it yet”. Rich then stood there and handed Scotty a book “These are the rules of our town, the ones highlighted in red are the ones your wife has broken”.
“Come with me, I want a word with you alone” as Alex led Scotty into another room. “Here are some rules for you to be aware of “No kissing out in public, under no circumstance wills your wife be allowed out without you and last no sharing a bed together”. Scotty then stood up “Was there a murder in my house, because there was a lot of blood on the floors and in the bathtub”?
Rich then walked away “Don’t try to look for things, it will only get you killed”
After that he decided to go home, to his surprise Lilly was lying up in bed reading something. “In the past fifty years, ten couples went missing all living in this house”.
The two looked at each other, as a tree branch crashed through a window.
