Up here in Winnipeg we have a real mosquito problem in the summer. Our highest trap count over a 12 hour period was 454 females. Needless to say the nights and early morning are sometimes unbearable. I here there are other cities in th U.S. and Canada with the same problem. My question is this: What does your city do to combat this problem? This city is currently in a small "war" with certain individuals over the use of Malathion to fog adult mosquitoes. This resulted in individuals barricading the fogging trucks last year as well as throwing rocks at city crews. This year they staged a protest at the city yards and got their children to lay down in front of the trucks effectively halting the program for two days. Needless to say we are a city divided. winnipeg.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=mb_fogging20040720You can opt to have your house not fogged and the city creates a 100 meter buffer zone around you. We have one section of the city known as the "granola belt" where almost no fogging is done. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this type of reaction?? Apparently we are one of the few cities in North America that still uses Malathion.

When I was a young kid (40 years ago) we used to have a truck come down our road and spray. It must be the same thing. We'd run out into the road to stand in the fog. Now how stupid was that? And unhealthy no matter how you look at it. They shouldn't have been doing that. ~Naj
