Ok, I know this is weird... but I've noticed a lot of you seem to have TiVo. I googled it up and have kind of a general idea of what it's about. Still there are some things I wanted to ask (from those of you who have it, of course):
1. Does it really work as well as the site says it does? Is it worth having?
2. Do you think I'd be able to use it in another country--say one different from the US or Canada?
If you could answer these, I'd be really happy. We've never heard of them around these parts...

Well, heres the thing about TiVo. I have TiVo and this brand called MOXI for our HDTV. Having used them both, I would say MOXI is the better of the two. With TiVo, you can only watch one show unless you have this special router thing thats really expensive and costs a lot to install. With MOXI you can watch a show while you record another. While TiVo is a great way to record shows, I've heard from many other users, and also in my own experience, that it's not the most reliable service, and has not switched channels sometime. With MOXI, that can't happen because it doesn't have to be on the channel to record. I don't really know about international services, I'm sure that if you can't use TiVo that there are other services avaliable to people. All in all, I'd say anything TiVo-Like is a great investment if you're the type of person who watches a lot of TV. If you only watch a few shows a week, I don't think it's really worth the money, but if you have a lot of shows and aren't really home at night, it's a good way to record and much less of a hastle then VHS tapes.

Thanks, CC. What happens to things you record? Do they go like on a tape? A cd? The site doesn't explain that, either.

DisasterFreak - TiVo stores the shows you record on an internal hardrive. When you want to watch something, you go to the "Now Playing" list and it lists everything you have recorded. You scroll down and choose the program you want to watch. You can also set up "Season Passes" for all your favorite shows. Then, it automatically records all your favorite shows from then on. I love TiVo because it's easier to watch the programs once they've been recorded, and the quality is the same as when the show aired, instead of losing some generations of quality like you do with VHS. I have DirecTV (a satellite system), so I'm not sure how it works with a cable system.

Well, it's very likely I'll have SKY next year, as I'm probably leaving the city for a couple of years... I guess that's pretty close to direcTV? I'm still not sure if it'll work around here, though. Since no one seems to know anything about it, maybe I'll buy the box but no one'll know how to hook it up ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) . Anyhow, thanks for all your info, guys. :thumb:

I'm still back in the dark ages with my VHS tapes. I have a hard time with change but I'm sure one of these days VHS tapes will become extinct so I better prepare now. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

You're not alone Ryebeach. I'm still using tapes and I lost track of what I taped this season. I had to go through all my tapes to find the CSI:NY and Miami eps I didn't watch. I'm switching to something like Tivo but with my cable provider. My brother does it and tells me it is better.

I'm just trying to figure out what to invest in. I mean, I'm not gonna be earning a whole lot of money after graduation (not by a long shot!)... and I have to get a vcr-like device anyway (something to tape shows with, cuz I'm forever missing them)... and I wanted to see what would be best. Maybe I should check with my cable provider, see if they have any special service. But if they have, I've never heard of it so far.

Disasterfreak - I haven't heard of anything like TiVo around here either. I'm not sure if the cable companies I have here would be the affiliated with the ones you have (I think maybe they are). I'd love to have this TiVo too, since I'm never home at night. I've become dependent of my VCR (thankfully he's been nice to me lately).

Tati--I'll ask around, and if I hear of anything, I'll let you know. As I said before, it would be easy as pie to get the box--we could just order it through the internet--but if our cable companies don't know what to do with them, we'd be in a real spot. BTW, what's your cable company? We have 3 big ones around here: VTR, Metropolis-Intercom, and SKY (satellite dish). I have the 2nd. It's ok, but sometimes edits out parts of movies. Or so they say--I've so far never caught them at it.

The main companies here are DirecTV, SKY (both satellite dish), TVA and NET (both cable and national, I think). I have the latter, because the satellites are too expensive and not worthy considering I only care about 3 channels: Sony, Warner, and (now) Universal. I'm not sure if the cable companies must be "programmed" to work with the TiVo. I don't have any info on it, but from what I read here it seems to be an advanced VCR. It could be trouble anyway - I had a hard time setting up my VCR to work with my cable system.
