www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/20081114_102_arrested_across_city_in_massive_narcotics_raid.html102 arrested across city in massive narcotics raidBy DAVID GAMBACORTA Philadelphia Daily Newsgambacd@phillynews.com 215-854-5994Philadelphia narcotics cops have dropped the hammer yesterday on two notorious drug gangs that have been at each other's throats for months. After four murders and a spate of shootings linked to the warring factions battling for dominance in a West Kensington neighborhood, police yesterday moved into place their narcotics field-unit team. Two weeks' worth of intelligence work culminated in a series of daylong raids and arrests. By late last night, 94 search warrants had been served, 102 people arrested, including 10 juveniles, and more than $698,000 worth of drugs, cash and guns confiscated. When cops swarmed a house on Kip Street near Tioga, they found a dogfighting ring, including one champion pit bull and three other dogs that cops referred to as "chew dogs" because they were used for training for the big dog. Also found was a wooden treadmill, which was marked on the side: "Red River Curley Quality Treadmills." It and other devices were used to get the dogs in fighting shape, said Deputy Commissioner William Blackburn at a news conference at the 25th Police District headquarters, Whitaker Avenue near Erie. Narcotics Inspector Bob Snyder said 21 weapons had been confiscated, including sawed-off shotguns and rifles. He noted that yesterday's crackdown was just one in a series of raids that police, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration agents have conducted throughout the city over the past several months. "If we haven't been to one section of the city, we're coming," he said. "If we've been to your section of the city, we'll be coming back." Police noted some heroin packets bore the name of President-elect Barack Obama. Blackburn said that many dealers use movie titles, or names of actors and politicians to identify their brands. Blackburn said he believes that the arrests and the drug and weapon seizures has left the warring drug gangs devastated.

Thanks boxman. This information is going to be very helpful in writing my fan fics for CC. Sounds like you live in or near Philly. That's always helpful. I've never been there so I have to rely on what I can find online for information. Sometimes it's hard to find. (For example I'm currently working on one that involves a serial killer of prostitutes and I need to find out where the prostitute district - if any - that Philly has. I assume it does. Most large cities of that type have such districts.) Anyway, it also helps when watching the show by knowing where they're talking about instead of just imagining it.

Was wondering if someone could tell me the name of Lt. Stillman's brother (the Catholic Priest) and if possible what church he was assigned to? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Jerry. Stillman's older brother is named Andrew. Don't know if they ever give a specific name to his church.
By the way, I was musing with some idea about a fic. The basis would be that the major of a veeery small mountain village (think 25-50 inhabitants) is killed and Lilly and Scotty move there, becoming sort of city mouses in the process.
Naturally this raises all sort of questions. First, are there places like this in Pennsylvania? I want the place to be sort of backwards and isolated, at least one hour drive from the nearest place with a train station. I don't want it to be Amish though.
Second, is it feasible to get two Phily cops there anyway? I don't really know anything about how murder investigations work in rural America (well, I don't even know how murders are investigated in American cities outside of what I've seen in TV and movies, lol). I've read a bit on the Pennsylvania State Police in Wikipedia - would they be the guys to take care of it? Oh, and I'm planning to put a sheriff as a character, but do these guys exist in Pennsylvania?
I hope it doesn't sound too dumb. Heck. I feel like that while writing this...

Your best bet to fit inside the context of the Cold Cases (if you wanted to, since technically they're just a regular homicide unit that happens to get a lot of cold cases) would be to have a killing that fit the pattern of a previous serial killer. The way that police work is generally done in the US is this: jurisdiction belongs to the governing body where the crime was committed: so, if the crime was committed in a small town, it would be up to that down's police force to investigate. Depending on the severity of the crime, that town might ask surrounding towns to get involved. The only time outsiders are called in is when the crime involves multiple states (then it is usually the FBI that is called in), or the killing(s) are in such severity that a smaller department just cannot handle it on their own. That would be the most plausible explanation for your story.

LII, the show is rather vague and I haven't been able to determine "exactly" where any of them live. I can say that Lilly's in Center City somewhere, and Scotty seems to be the same. I can't say where Jeffries and Stillman live at all, there's not enough info in the show about that. Vera, however, seems to live in South Philly from last season's "Superstar" that had the scene with his wife Julie. That's too bad they don't go into where Stillman lives, well, I can make it up.

Can you see a detective from the Cold Case squad going to another district to help in undercover? Yikes, I hope that can happen 'cause it's gonna ruin my story I am writing. But I guess I could make it up. In my upcoming story, if a higher ranking police officer like a lieutenant or captain is kidnapped, do you see that other cities would be on the look out? Like if they took the official to Lancaster Pennsylvania or maybe to North Carolina? (Decision as to where they would be held hasn't been decided yet.)

I hope this is the right spot to put this.
I'm writing a fanfic where the main suspects are in London. I'm wondering, would the Cold Case be able to interview them remotely by video, or will I have to come up with an excuse for the department having enough money to fly the suspects over or to have the squad fly over to there?

Like if they took the official to Lancaster Pennsylvania or maybe to North Carolina? (Decision as to where they would be held hasn't been decided yet.) I don't know if the whole squad would go undercover (too many connections, and definitely resources unavailable to Philly PD), but I could see one, or maybe even two. If any officer was kidnapped, there would be a massive manhunt using any available resources, so yes, that would definitely be plausible, especially if it was suspected that they were transported to another state. I hope this is the right spot to put this. I'm writing a fanfic where the main suspects are in London. I'm wondering, would the Cold Case be able to interview them remotely by video, or will I have to come up with an excuse for the department having enough money to fly the suspects over or to have the squad fly over to there? Definitely possible; people are conducting job interviews via Skype now, so I don't see why they couldn't remotely interview. However, if they had the resources, I imagine they would rather interview in person, as video feeds can sometimes be choppy, unreliable, and lose a lot in translation.

I'd like to know where Philly sports fans stand on neighbouring sports teams.
For example The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Superbowl in 2006. Being relatively close, would Philly fans be rooting for them, or is there a rivalry, and would they still be sore that the Eagles didn't even make the playoffs?

Don’t know if anyone will be able to answer these but I’m asking just in case.
If an officer had their gun stolen in a confrontation with a suspect what would the consequences for the officer be, if any? How long would it take to get a new gun? What could/would be done about the theft? I’ve tried to research this, but the only cases I could find of an officer’s gun being stolen were when it was left in a car and even information on that was scares.
If an officer was the victim of a violent crime while atempting to apprehend a suspect and needed to testify about it later, but didn’t want the information to get around their colleagues, would this be possible and how? If it’s not possible, how private could it realistically be kept?
Also, if an officer slept with a suspect during a case, what could be the potential consequences of this? Could they get fired, or would they just get a telling off? Could it have an impact on the case?
