A solid episode in my book. This shows the double edged sword of recruiting. Most recruiters truly do want to help kids lead better lives and serve their country. Kids that may get into trouble but with the right guidance, can turn their lives around like Mike and Bobby did. The catch is the knowledge that some of these kids you help recruit will probably be killed. That is a tough thing to live with. Also liked the personal story with Lily and her family. Kudos to Celeste for calling Lily out on her excuses and not allowing her to push her family away any longer.

Loving the fact that Cold Case got Brat Packer Mare Winningham to play Lilly's stepmother!

I have to admit I'm going to be biased in favor of a story like this, and even though it didn't top "Honor" for me, I still gave the episode a "One of the Season's Best" vote. I really enjoyed Lilly's side story in the episode, and the family dinner with the step mom had me laughing! Also, in one of the office night scenes, I noticed for the first time the outside window does show the Philly skyline. Nice touch by the set designers!

Ha ha! I totally ripped "War At Home" for its stupid stereotypes and the episode's inability to get to the heart of the individuals and families involved when soldiers get called for duty. Thankfully, there wasn't any of that stupid Hollywood Left-Coast crap here tonight. I simply cannot stand it when people in the entertainment business use their exposure to tout their political views. Although I could argue that many enlist in the military to serve their country (rather than get out of a life of crime or misery, as portrayed many times in this episode), I thought the storyline was valid, considering it took place in the inner city.

No offense but you sound a right-wing person Why would I be offended? And actually, I would rather not be labeled to be in any category.

And let's keep the personal politics out of the discussion people.

For me, I just couldn't get into the story. I think I'm soldier-ed out with themes of the military last season especially the two season enders which I loved. As well, I did enjoy "Shore Leave"very much last season and also "Honor" before that (featuring John Stillman). I guess Kat and Vera are taking turns being absent! I do like Kat's long hair and I would like to see her collaborate more closely with Lilly on a case before the series concludes. Could the writers drum something up for that to make it happen? The family drama with Lilly was rather comical. I just love the way they wrote this. So, finally, Lilly has a family.

I too hope they put Lily and Kat together more. I'm also wondering when all the cast will be together again. As for them using a lot of military episodes, there are a lot of different stories you can use with the military, recruiting, families left behind etc.

I really liked this episode. Seemed very realistic and plausable.
Only the motive for the killing jumped up out of no where. I would have liked to have seen more of the abandonment issues presented a little firmer than just getting that her father was abusive. And she went from ducking down behind a trash can to shooting our victim in the middle of the alley.
It just seems like it would have been a case that wouldn't have run cold.
But the actors did a good job and the Rush story was touching. Mare Winningham was great. Would be cool to see her again down the road.
And on a technical note, the flashes of the characters in the past weren't all that smooth. It just took me out of it a touch.
For me it wasn't a Season Best but still, very enjoyable.

You know, about the family thing; is it just me or did that whole thing seemed stage? I mean, they picked up Finn, come home, and have dinner at 2am!
On one hand I have a hard time imagining that the Coopers would make up some elaborate scheme to get Lilly to join them for dinner, but at the same time I have a hard time believing that Lilly's stepmother would just conveniently have lemon chicken waiting for them.
And also, Finn making that shot at his dad? Talk about low blow.
Finn: Or you'll what? Walk out on me?
Yes, this, and the lack of music is what I noticed about the whole episode.

This season doesn't seem to have as much music as past seasons... another cost cutting measure?

Possibly. Getting the rights to air the songs they do takes money, and if CC is bereft of it at the moment, then they will be using more recent songs or more original material that will cost little to nothing. I will post my review of the episode as soon as I get a chance to watch it.

Once again, the personal story is more compelling than the case itself to me. They seem to be making Finn out to be the troubled teen, constantly running away from home (never seen THAT on TV! ) even stealing money and the car, but we're not given a clue what's causing this. The revelation that his father had another kid? I don't buy that as a reason, partly because I've actually been in Finn's situation and discovered my father had had another daughter years before. Granted I was a bit older when I learned this (about twenty) and wasn't really a "bad kid" to begin with, but I still don't see this as the reason for him acting out. Mare Winningham was great as the Cooper matriarch! In the entire history of the show have we seen ANYONE (besides maybe Stillman once in a blue moon) bring Lilly down to earth like that? I'm confident we've not seen the last of her. She was the only new actor in the episode that I recognized. Where's the Cooper daughter though? Maggie is her name, I believe. If she's the elder kid, I suppose she could be off at college, but I'd hate to run through the series without meeting her as well. As to the case itself: This ep didn't quite blow me away but I could live with it. I've had no complaints with any of the military-based eps I've seen (including the aforementioned "The War at Home"). I read the character list in the spoiler section, so there was no surprise who the doer would be. What did surprise me going in was finding out Bobby had been this ice-cold gang banger before putting on a uniform and gaining some self-respect. I really didn't recognize him even after his hood came down and even when Meathead called him "Bumper", it didn't register at first. It was a fun moment watching Mike kick the cr@p out of those guys. A combat vet like him has faced tougher foes than a couple of street punks, even with a gun. It's interesting how things can change in just a few years. The lack of support for the war in Iraq meant it was harder for recruiters like Mike to find people in 2005, but just a couple of months ago I read an article talking about things had swung the other way and now the armed forces were actually turning some people away. Anyone else catch the parallel of Jerry and Paul both objecting strenuously to their teenage sons' intended career path (soldier, cop). Paul being aware that Lilly's had more than a few brushes with death on the job (being shot and almost drowned, among others) and having been around when a colleague of hers was shot as well, you can understand a knee-jerk reaction to another of his children wanting to pursue such a dangerous path. Is Finn serious about this? I doubt it. Even if he is, I unfortunately don't expect the show has enough time left to see him turn eighteen, attend the academy, and graduate. Too bad. It'd be neat to see her in a mentor role, teaching a kid about being a cop. Andy Sipowicz did the same for his son Andy Jr. on "NYPD Blue", which was great to watch (albeit with a tragic ending). Is Mike's wife supposed to be someone we feel sorry for or not? Constantly being uprooted, and left alone while your significant other goes away for months at a time (assuming he comes back at all) has gotta be rough. I can't imagine what that's like. Still, she came off a little whiny, I think. She clearly regarded Victoria as a nuisance and seemed to be venting more then apologizing after her husband learned she'd cheated, as opposed to Geoff in "The War at Home". (Ever notice that that seems to be the case in TV and movies when it's the wife who's cheated?) This one didn't seem to have a clear resolution for the victim's story arc, which is rare for the show (one other example I can think of is "Red Glare", but I think that one was meant to be ambiguous). So is going overseas supposed to be the way to deal with his guilt? What happens if he sees another friend die? Wouldn't that just start the cycle all over again? And as unpleasant as Kristen came off, I think Mike volunteering to yet another tour without even discussing it with his wife is not cool. I know some people didn't care for the music too much but I really liked the opener (Gavin DeGraw "I Don't Wanna Be") and closer (Coldplay "Politik") Some minor tidbits: -Anyone else notice Mike's casebox was put away right next to the box for Jimmy Tully from "Shore Leave"? Wonder if THAT was just a coincidence or intentional on the crew's part (I would lean towards the latter). -No Vera this week. When are we gonna get some payoff on this health issue of his? -How long as it been since we got a mention (let alone an apperance) of Doherty breathing down Stillman's neck? Get him back here! -Come to think of it, we've gone a few eps without Saccardo as well (seems longer cause of the break). -Nothing on Scotty's folks this week either. I've already said my hypothesis of what really happened with Scotty's mom. What's yours? -2005 is now in second place for the number of cold jobs from that year. The number depends on if you count one or two cases from the episode "Joseph" and if you count the "Blue" 2-parter as one episode or two. Assuming you count one on both parts as one, we've had seven cases from 2005. In first place is 1999, with ten or eleven cases totally or partially from this year (depending on what year you consider Greg Cardiff from "Resolutions" as having been murdered in). -Next week looks promising, with a case-with-a-case almost, and some familiar faces. Fingers crossed! ;D

About the whole Finn thing; I have a feeling that they're trying to make Finn out to be a male version of Lilly at that age.
