Wow, what a great episode! I love hockey so I was naturally drawn to this particular episode more than any other that is sports-centric. I really loved the acting and felt that they all did a great job of bringing the characters to life, especially the actor who played Tommy. You really felt for him, and any time the script can make you feel that way, you know it was written well.
The music was absolutely sublime, especially the closing number "Against The Wind". I love that song so, so much. The music is what bumped it up from "excellent" to "one of the season's best". The songs were perfectly selected and perfectly placed - I had a feeling that would be the closing song because it's just perfect. The lyrics are absolutely spot on. Can't go wrong with Bob Seger!

I didn't know how I was going to like this episode as I don't care for hockey. Also not a Bob Seger fan. Where are the women artists? They've not featured not even one! What's with that? Anyhow, I did enjoy the case and most notable Lilly and Vera's interrogation of Dwight. Oh I loved how they fudged the birth certificate! Brilliant. Lilly: You must have peeked in the 80's. I just don't see it. And Vera getting the DNA. A truly memorable interrogation for sure! I loved the end with Vera aka "Hammer" playing hockey with Scotty and Lilly in the stands. Also quite hilarious. I enjoyed ADA and Kat. At first I thought ADA was snubbing Kat about Thursday nights ( in that maybe he was no longer interested in her).

There aren't very many notable female classic rock artists, which is why so few are used. 50s-60s, there are a ton of female artists to choose from, and even more if you go back further than that. 80s, 90s, now...absolutely. But that period from about 1970 to 1981 or 82 is very dicey as far as that goes. There are some to be sure, but not as many to choose from. Which is understandable. Also, here is something I read about why his music was chosen specifically:
You can read more here-->http://www.losanjealous.com/2009/11/25/upcoming-cold-case-episode-to-feature-bob-seger-songs/
And Bob Seger is amazing, you need to get his Greatest Hits CD.

The first half seemed like a 'typical' Cold Case episode, and it felt nicely reminiscent of many older episodes to me. The second half really kicked in with the Lilly/Vera interview and the revelation that Molly had a kid! It was easy to give this episode an "excellent". I'm still liking the earlier hour very much, and I think the follow-up with a detective show ("Criminal Minds") is a much better selection than the medical show...

For me it was good episode. Hockey, right after football(soccer), is my favourite sport but I'm actually glad they didn't use a lot of stereotyopical stuff about sport. Yet, they did show fights, but didn't focus on them which is great. The episode itself, I have to rewatch because i think I didn't focus on plot too much. I watched Lilly most of the time and I couldn't take my eyes off her... Not sorry 'bout that! When she spoke with Nick she said something about calling EMT's and after that I couldn't stop laughting, oh and the interview with coach was good too. Lil didn't wear a button shirt in that and it was nice to see her in more casual clothes Thing between Bell and Miller saw nicley played Scotty and his side-plot finally moved forward which is nice And in this episode Jeffries was missing, and not sure why but I noticed that right away and hoped for him to show up but he didn't When it comes to music...I didn't know any of the songs. I know it was Seger but except 'Turn the page' cover done my Metallica I don't know any of his songs. Sorry. And in my opinion for past few episodes sound mixing is screwed up.

I enjoyed this episode even though I'm not a big fan of hockey. There were no slow parts in this episode. My only gripe... again the best friend was the doer due to being rejected and left behind. A fresh motive every once in a while never hurts...

Excellent... Maybe because I wasn't expecting much... But I liked it a lot... not my favorite like WASP or Forensics but completely solid episode. Are therey so many fights in hockey? It's not practiced in my country (I live in the Caribbean). Like when Cold Case makes an episode around an historic event like in November 22 and now this one. The only thing: Why the brother had to see the victim? They were not really close. It could have been Vera who was truly involved in the case.

Are therey so many fights in hockey? Yes, there are. It's a very physical sport, and the fighting is part of the appeal for some people. And it's only right that Tommy's brother should see him - they're family. Family should see the victim before any of the detectives. If my sibling was brutally murdered, I'd want to be visited by their spirit before anyone else. I'm sure my parents would feel the same way.

Another thing is that even if they used the same story "the best friend killed the victim"; It felt different from "The crossing" or "Hood Rats". IDK how but somehow

Overall a pretty good episode. I'm not a hockey fan but it didn't feel like a "niche" episode, perhaps because they tied it to a real event (The US hockey team's victory in the 1980 Olympics). What I also really liked is they didn't have it ending with the victim deciding to quit the team, which has been done a million times ("Colors", "Superstar", "Glory Days", and last week's "Forensics"). I was getting a little sick of that arc. I was suspicious of Dwight early on, being a guy who has no talent hanging on to a guy who does, since guys like that tend to be the doer ("Colors", "Hoodrats"). Not the most original choice of doer, and we've already had two "best friend" doers this season ("The Crossing", "Hoodrats"), but we've already had an older brother ("Chinatown") and a coach ("Forensics") as well. What would have been really interesting would be to either have it be Molly (which would also explain her and her father being estranged) or Masters (having the guy trying to clear his name turn out to be the doer afterall would be a cool twist, one not done since season one's "Hubris") I actually thought for a moment they might do the latter when Masters briefly turned up again the the Coach's flashback. Speaking of coaches, I suspected Coach Heaton would be up to no good somehow since the show typically paints coaches in an unfavorable light ("Stand Up and Holler", "Family", "Glory Days", and the unseen coach who molested Scotty' brother). That and Jude Ciccollela is known for playing shady characters. Plus the show does have a history of having the doer be played by the best-known actor in the guest cast ("Volunteers", "The Hen House", "Slipping", "Jurisprudence", "Soul"), which he certainly is to any fans of "24" (when are they gonna bring him back anyway?) I'm kinda glad they didn't go in that direction though. I didn't think they would anyway since he was introduced so late in the story (in the present, not flashbacks). I think having his brother see the victim was the right call. It really doesn't bother me that cops don't seem to see the victims these days. Usually there's someone closer who deserves to see them one last time. Regarding this week's subplots: -I already have a suspicion what REALLY happened to Scotty's mom (see my post in the thread for "Bombers" in the spoiler section) and what we saw this week, while not confirming it, is not inconsistent. -Kat and Bell are fun together and a nice remember of his occasional forgetfulness. The detectives' relationships with recurring characters (especially ADA's) don't have a history of lasting more than a few eps, but given the very real possiblity that this will be the last season, I hope they make this one stick. -Fun seeing Vera on the ice ("Hammer"! ) and ragging on Bell for mentioning a Rangers player. Surprised him bragging about being a "big hockey star" ("Stand Up and Holler") never came up. One a more serious note, Vera pushing himself like this while not taking care of himself makes me wonder if a heart attack or something bad like that won't be in the cards for Vera this season. -Nothing about Saccardo, Moe, or Lilly's dad this week. No mention of Doherty breathing down Stillman's neck either. I think we're about due to have him rear his ugly head again. Doherty's a great character played by a great actor, plus it gives Stillman something to do (it's always hard to write stuff for the boss to do on shows like this).

I thought this episode was ok but maybe I'll like it even more when I re watch it. I wasn't really paying attention the first time because someone kept mentioning that hockey is violent over and over again. It fit that Tommy's brother saw the victim. Tommy's brother gave him the hockey stick and he even admitted that it was Tommy time. What I really liked was the ending where Vera was on the ice and Lilly and Scotty were in the stands.

Gonna respond to some of your points one by one lol. Not the most original choice of doer, and we've already had two "best friend" doers this season ("The Crossing", "Hoodrats"), but we've already had an older brother ("Chinatown") and a coach ("Forensics") as well. What made it different for me other than when Grace & Cal killed their best friends (Darcy and Nash)is the knowledge that unlike the other two friendships, Dwight and Tommy's WAS over. Tommy finally Dwight for who he was, a no talent sleazeball who thought nothing of betraying his best friend the way he did. Grace and Cal were so overcome with jealously (Darcy finding happiness and Nash's superior skateboarding skills) that couldn't realize that while the friendships changed (as many friendships do),Darcy and Nash weren't going to leave them behind. Tommy was, a good riddance to bad rubbish. Very true. I picked up Dwight as the doer not only for the reasons you already stated, but the fact he was shown early on in the show. To my knowledge, the only doer this season that was shown later on in the show was Chandra Peterson in Soul. She was questioned after the cops had talked to Billy's dad, the club owner, his manager and the person whom he replaced in the band. I agree with you. I do know the cops get involved in the cases but even so.. they haven't lived with it the way the loved ones have. Like in Sleepover, I felt Rita's mother should have seen Rita over Lily. To me, those closest to the victims being able to see them one last time helps give them a sense of closure in knowing their loved ones can finally rest in peace. I do as well.. but good grief, his brother already had an experience like that... hasn't his family gone through enough. Me too, and unlike Kite, Bell does seem to care about her other than adding another notch to his belt. One way or another it will come out. Either through a heart attack or the docter getting in trouble. A docter can't keep rubberstamping physicals of people who do have health problems without it coming back to bite him in the butt sooner or later. Either because the patient dies or they cause the death of someone else due to health problems Vera's second was clearly willing to overlook.

Ive got to say I LOVED this episode! Maybe it's cause im Canadian and was born to like hockey! But some of the moments in this episode where priceless! Lil and Scotty at the end and vera on the ice! AMAZING The dinner between Bell and Kat Vera giving Bell a hard time about the Rangers And i loved the case. It seemed to have some of the old Cold Case feeling to it somehow. It seemed much more familiar and comfortable this week. Overall a great episode. Def going to be on my repeat list

This was such a solid episode! Great all the way around. I am not a hockey fan, but this was such a great episode. Bob Seger music! Loved it!
There is something great about all the interrogations that Lilly & Nick have together. Still my favorite would be from Gleen, but it seems Lilly is a lot more sassy when she is working with Nick.
Did anyone notice that the speech that Tommy said to Dwight right before he whacked him was almost verbatim the speech that Mark Ratner gave to Mike Damone (Robert Romanus-Dwight 2009).

Yes there is. The one from Gleen was excellent, as was the one they did together in Pin Up Girl(which to my knowledge is the last one they did together). They hold no punches back at all.

Gonna respond to some of your points one by one lol. My turn! Generally the doer is introduced (in the present) in the first or second act. The third and fourth acts are usually about questioning people again after we learn they were holding something back the first time. Technically Chandra still fits in there, providing the fourth flashback. True. As invested as detective get in cases (especially Lilly), the fact is, they never actually met the victims in 99% of the cases. Granted that little look of gratitude they sometimes give detectives (supposedly for solving their case) is nice, but there's usually someone more deserving. I do as well.. but good grief, his brother already had an experience like that... hasn't his family gone through enough. Actually, what would be great is if they brought his brother back to help her face what happened to her and deal with it. Now that's a bit of a long shot, since Nestor Carbonell's a regular on "Lost" this season. Networks tend not to like sharing the actors on their shows with other networks. Ironically, the reason Nestor was so scarce in the fourth season of "Lost" was cause he was doing a show on CBS. Then again, they sometimes let actors go for one episode. We can hope. Me too, and unlike Kite, Bell does seem to care about her other than adding another notch to his belt. Kite did come off a bit cocky, but I think he was interested in more than a one-night stand with Lilly, otherwise he might've been a bit more tolerant of her workaholic attitude, knowing he wouldn't have to put up with it once he'd had his fun. I highly doubt we'll see or hear from that doctor again. That was pretty much a bit role on the show. More likely, we'll see Vera being the one to pay with some health problems. And kassandra, interestingly, I'm Canadian too and really I'm kinda indifferent about hockey.

Thought it was an excellent episode and do wished they had more of Lilly and Nick parings. I don't know why but I like L/N parings more than L/S.
Nick looked so cute in that uniform and loved his nickname.. 'Hammer'
Glad they were able to do all four major sports.
I did think it was the coach who did it though but was surprised it wasn't. I liked that the brother got to see Tommy at the end.
