Did anyone notice that is the second time that Coldplay has been used in the ending?? Also the scene before Lilly finds her mother passed out on the floor , both Lilly and Scotty are dressed alike wearing the same black suit and blue shirt

Here's the confusing part, when the landlord tells Lilly about what her mother said about her about how smart she is. How come Christina wasn't mentioned especially being that she was Ellen's favorite did this all change?? Can't remember Ellen ever saying, Christina was her favorite. We get to to see the Rush family story a lot from Lilly's point of view. Bet Christina felt in a different way as neglected as Lilly did. Ellen was and is an alcoholic, more focused on herself than on anyone else. Though I agree, it was a bit strange, that Christina wasn't mentioned even once. I liked the episode. It was no perfect episode but a good story, a tragedy. Though in some ways the story was predictable (the first scene with Boyka I had a strong hunch that she wasn't as a nice lady as she pretended to be), I wasn't sure about the doer and the motive til the end. Had the thought it could have been Lena herself. Very much liked the scene of Lena and Lilly - some range of emotion. Generally, Lilly showed a lot of different emotions in this episode, finally she's alive again. Dunno, but I missed the committed side of her for some time now, a certain intensity she showed in interrogations, the will not only to find the murderer but to bring some sort of justice to the victim. Not to mention Lilly's ambivalent reaction to her mother's situation, a mix of anger and love and care and distress. Kudos for that. Despite some weaknesses: This episode reminded me of why I once got hooked to this show.

Ellen was and is an alcoholic, more focused on herself than on anyone else. Though I agree, it was a bit strange, that Christina wasn't mentioned even once. I don't think Ellen has any idea of what happened between Lilly, Christina, and Scotty. Remember, Lilly banished her sister from Philly two seasons ago because of hooking up with Scotty. I kinda doubt Lilly ever explained to Ellen why what happened between the sisters could have led Christina to avoid the wedding. Back in season three, Lilly was still upset at all of them--Ellen, Christina, and Scotty. Ellen might be under the assumption that Christina has a big grudge against her, the way Christina didn't appear for the wedding. ...and what was with Ellen looking at the flower in Lilly's apartment. Wasn't that a Yellow Daisy?? The floriography sites say that Yellow symbolizes Friendship; and in this case, the Daisy seems to symbolize Loyal Love. Wow! That's in Long Island?? COOL! ...yes i will admit that i assumed the mob boss was a man..heh what a twist! He he he... It made me think of Dolly Parton in "Best Little lovely womanhouse..." for a second. I didn't think it was all too unusual for the house to be run by a Madame, but the fact that she had this other "decent" job was a sinister twist!

Whoa, this was a pretty awesome episode! The case was great, but my FAVORITE part of the whole thing was the Lilly-mama drama, once again! It was heartbreaking seeing them in the hospital and Lilly having to raise her voice at her mom...totally sad! And she has late-stage cirrhosis! I was shocked! but it totally blew me away when she said "you'll have to come and live with me." my mouth DROPPED open and I was like OMG! and then @ the end when Lilly was staring at her and then when she looked up Lilly turned her head, ok I'll admit it, I cried! There is no telling what we are gonna see with this GREAT, yet sad, mother-daughter drama...although if you ask me, it seems more like Lilly is Ellen's mom.... Anyways I also loved @ the end when Lilly and Kat were taking Lena out of the house and Lilly had given her her coat and had her arm around her, acting like a sweet mom! You can always tell when Lilly is thinking about her mom! And I LOVED it too, lol, when Vera gave Lil a "welcome back" nod, and Lilly gave such a "thank you" kind of sweet smile back to him..oh so great! So of course I loved this episode and the music was great too, but I can't WAIT to see how Lilly deals with Ellen!!!!!

What's most sinister is that it occured to me that she could probably use her legit job to "recruit" more lost girls into her organization! I still regret that nearly everyone wants to talk about Lilly and her mom rather than the compelling case, perhaps the best of the season (and that's saying something)!

Now, if they could only write a romance for Lil that satisfies as much as this mom story. Amen to that, TVFan. We're watching Lil grow as a character and reflect on the way her role as her mother's caregiver (from the moment she was very young) has changed. Perfectly said once again, TVFan. I do feel perhaps there's a change on the horizon for both Lilly and Ellen as their relationship moves into this next phase, evolving out of what it used to be, maybe into something better. Don't really know, but I'm enjoying seeing it play out. I still regret that nearly everyone wants to talk about Lilly and her mom rather than the compelling case, perhaps the best of the season (and that's saying something)! I think it just depends on what each one of us enjoys most about the show. Some (like myself) really enjoy the more personal angles/backstories - especially ones that involve Lilly - over the cases, even when the case(s) are compelling (as this one definitely was). And since we only ever tend to get snippets of the personal stuff, I guess those of us interested in that part of the show tend to latch on to it for discussion. If it was on display all the time, it would probably seem like old news and we wouldn't want to talk about it. LOL!

I hope so LillyKat. I can't wait to see what they have cooking. About that look between Vera and Lilly -- did anyone see any feeling vibes between the two?

About that look between Vera and Lilly -- did anyone see any feeling vibes between the two? Vibes? No. I put that down to a kinship. A recognition of their similarities. There situations aren't so different. Work is where they feel most comfortable right now. His look was a sort of "welcome back / welcome home / I'm here if you need a friend / look at us 2, here again" type thing. And she smiled, comforted and slightly amused at the absurdity of it.

So maybe Lilly will confide in Vera soon... ;D I wouldn't mind. About that look between Vera and Lilly -- did anyone see any feeling vibes between the two? Vibes? No. I put that down to a kinship. I accidentally rated this episode too low. Gave it an "excellent", when it should definitely be "best of the season". I already knew about the Lilly/Mom storyline because I'd spoiled myself on TVFan's blog, but it was still sooo much more than that even when I watched it. Great acting, great storyline--very well developed. Finally something emotional and original that gives Lilly's character some dimension. It had gotten real flat for a while there. Now she's alive again. And I LOVE Meredith Baxter. She plays the dissipated so well ;D.
Case was very VERY disturbing for me. Those faces will haunt me for a while. Among all great evils in this world, slavery of any sort--especially when related to the sex trade--and child abuse have got to be among the worst. This episode in a way dealt with both. It made an impression and won't be forgotten in a hurry.

It just occurred to me the other day, I wonder, given how eager the feds were interested in getting Nechelnyk (sp?) that they might cut a deal with Katarina to testify. I have a feeling they might, though that might not sit too well with Scotty.

I found this on youtube the other day. It's a demo reel for Ksenia Solo, who played Lena. The Cold Case stuff is a minute or two into it.
What surprised me is there's actually a couple of lines in there that weren't in the aired episode. Makes me wonder what other little bits have been cut out of episodes and if we'll ever get to see them...

Just saw this episode last night and, per usual, reading the related episode thread here the next day.
Kind of surprised ... shocked, really ... that NO ONE seemed to make any reference or connection to Season 2 of The Wire. Seems pretty clear that the plot was taken from there (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's not the first time that a Cold Case episode has borne a resemblance to The Wire and there's no better show to be comped to).
Anyway, I'll just say that for all the people here (if any are still reading this site) who thought this was one of the best episodes for the plot and concept, do yourself a favor and rent S2 of The Wire. Yeah, the whole season. It's not a big spoiler here to say that a big part of the season's plotline was VERY similar.
