Dark screen displays the date: September 23, 1995 with the song: I will refuse By Pailhead. The first screen opens up to two boys Neil and Cameron as they start repeating the opening Phrase of the Twilight Zone while the camera zooms around to pictures whom was sitting down at the food court; before pulling out their guns as they began shooting at innocent civilians as people scream while running trying to avoid getting shot. The camera begins taking us on a wild ride while the music begins faded out until it goes black; before displaying a Television showing what had just happened while we hear the announcer take about it.
An unknown boxman is seen putting the boxes away while the music plays solemnly while the camera scans down depicting each victims box each marked Closed on top; until the upbeat beginning of the episode music begins to play. We now see the top of possibly city hall while camera pans downward at some steps as we see Vera, Rush and Valens walking up the steps. Valens asks Rush if Stillman still has her in deep freeze with her replying how he is holding a grudge; referring to last season’s finale in which Rush falls for the victim whom was now alive. That’s where Vera chimes calling Joseph a fugitive as they asked where he is now, until Vera asked is Valens is going to the bar night because of the nurses.
Upon meeting Stillman at a coffee stand he ignores Rush but goes on to ask the detectives if they remember the job about the mall shooting in 1995; somehow during renovations of the mall they found a video camera that was used to videotape the massacre. Camera focus on Rush until we now find ourselves in the bullpen as flyover shot is used showing the squad watching the video while both Camera and Neil’s voices are heard from the TV set. During the conversation the camera zooms in closure to some of our detectives faces until Stillman catches something while makes them realize there might be a third shooter; as the music signals the credits are about to roll before the tape goes blank.
We see drawings of two guys inside of a Television looking pretty angry before seeing a devil poised with a gun while hearing Vera’s voiceover while another drawing depicting someone lying on the ground dead; next looking pretty much like the mall scene in the tape, and two guys pointing guns at each other while fire is burning everywhere. Next we see writings with the words in the middle: KILL EVERYBODY. Camera pans up to Stillman before Vera then Rush listening to him finishing the words from Cameron’s journal two days before the shooting; Rush picks up Neil’s artwork showing a Demonic force holding a gun.
Stillman then mentions that according to classmates everything was set the boys talked about it 24-7. Aside from that both Cameron and Neil went to high school together and worked at the mall on the weekends; but then Rush states that according to computer logs the Destroyer and the Apocalypse were monikers they used online were big fans of the game Renegade Massacre. Rush goes to say Cameron was the Destroyer and Neil was the Apocalypse but wonders who the widow maker might be. Stillman tells them to bring in the parents and survivors see what they know but Rush tells them that Cameron’s family is still in town with Neil’s family moved to Georgia two years back.
Music plays as we see the next scene as Jefferies and Valens are interviewing Cameron’s father, stating he was polite and good mannered. When Valens asked him if he knows about the game his son was playing him and Jefferies get the father talking as he admits Cameron played on-line with Dayton Moore one of the survivors. The father brings up that he used to live down the block staying the three of them were thick as thieves until high school, and bullied Cameron and Neil all the time. As Valens and Jefferies begin to walk away Cameron’s father goes on while his wife stands by the door listening; before heading inside just as her husband says they had lost a child on that day as well.
Flashback we heard sirens as people gather in front of the mall while Cameron’s parents stand there; as the survivors begin coming out of the building. Dayton comes out running into her mother’s arms before a cop comes up to them asking if they are parents of Cameron going on tell them that he might think their son was involved in the shooting. Camera shows the scared faces of the victims and families before ending this gruesome sad flashback. Now Cameron’s dad states that they are just an ordinary family as Jefferies buts in tell him that normal families don’t have Military assault rifles at home.
Back at headquarters we see the present Dayton as the camera pans down seeing how he is still affected by the shooting; as Rush and Miller walk into the room. Dayton tells Rush being in closed rooms doesn’t mix as well as she opens up the door; Miller asked him that he’s always looking for the exit. Dayton says after eleven years he thinks he’d be over it but it’s still there; while Miller tells him that he grew up with Cameron and Neil. When the two get to talking about the game Rush brings up his Online ID which Dayton admits to that but states that he stopped playing with those Psychos was before the shooting add that to them this wasn’t just a game but practice. That he didn’t need a fantasy life and it was the last thing to be seen with them in public.
Music by The Smashing Pumpkins called Bullet with Butterfly wings is playing which we while see a Dayton sitting at the table with his buddies commenting on people. One girl his friend comments on calls Butterfingers before camera slides over to insecure guy Davey; before calling Littlegritter Neil to come over to their table. Then Dayton throws his hotdog onto the floor before Neil picks it up and eats it as Cameron comes over staring at the guys pretending to shot a gun with his hands at them; as we see a stare coming from Dayton as the flashback ends.
We find out this happened three months before the two went ballistic, but Dayton blames himself for the shooting but Rush says he isn’t. Music comes on as we see a more laid back Rush wearing Pajamas lying in bed looking over a yearbook while her new boyfriend Joseph sits nearby shirtless; he asks why she keeps a photo next to her bed before Rush playfully knocks him down as they roll around together kissing before her cell rings. Answering it Vera tells her she needs to see; before Rush jokes with Joseph before leaving.
In the bullpen Rush, Miller and Vera are looking at the videotape but the tape couldn’t spot the shooters. Vera hits play says at 3:05 the shooting begins as Miller chimes in saying it trapped 40 civilians and the shooters; now hearing Vera’s voice while telling them that the rampage continues for fifteen minutes until the SWAT team shows up. The three of them soon are figuring out that the third shooter was posing as one of the survivors as the camera leaves us with a shot of Rush’s face before cutting to a million commercials.
Coming back Valens’s voice is overheard while the scene opens in the bullpen; as him, Rush and Stillman are walking. Vera meets them there saying they traced the camera back to a store in the mall, and it was stolen a few days before the attack but one of the survivors Davy Schulman worked there as a stock boy. Now with Miller interviewing him Stillman pulls Valens into his office telling him that they have a boxing coach who is pedophile and that his brother’s name came up; that his brother should testify. Stillman goes on to say this guy is still out coaching until the court date comes up; saying there is no harm in looking.
Music plays as we see a flashback to a younger Davey before flashing to the present seeing him gently rubbing a horse’s head, telling Miller after the shooting he had lost all trust in people and landed up here. Somehow getting to talking and bringing up the video camera Davey knows who had stolen the camera before the shooting. Flashback occurs as the song Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins begins playing as the girl Tina comes in saying that one of the Video camera’s is pretty cool, teasing him about making some porn. Camera flashes to the same guy that Dayton was sitting next to kissing a girl as Tina comments they should get a room, before we see a back shot showing Tina stealing the camera putting it into her bag. Davey tells Tina she deserves someone who treats her better before she shows him she stole it before leaving.
Next scene we see Rush and Jefferies interviewing Tina as he asks her how the videotape got into her possession; but when Rush tells her that Cameron and Neil used it to film their shooting spree Tina acts surprised by all of this. Then she says she got caught and was put in Mall jail but wasn’t going to let the security guard call her folks. Heading into another flashback of the song Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter is playing while Barry the guard sits on a table pulling out the camera that Tina had stolen from the store, before Barry walks out. Tina grabs her bag peering into a room while Barry is showing both Cameron and Neil the security system; aka mall.
