We see a the logo for Cold Case as we see a brief flashback on what happened previously during the Season four finale, before it shoots down to an injured Lilly looking up as machines beep in the room. Quick cut to the song: All Apologies By Nirvana which is set on September 2, 1994 as three boys meet in front of the house They tease each other but one kid Jack says he can’t go to the pool but after being teased he agrees as his friends follow him . Camera pans up to the trees which show sunlight peeking through before the music fades as cops make their way to an abandoned old pool which has graffiti covered wall. In the midst of leaves among other useless junk three dead boys from the teaser are shown, but camera pans over to Jack which lays there with his eyes taped shut before it flashes to a black and white photograph
In the warehouse there are three stacked boxes bearing the names: Russo G, Costley S, Raymes J all with the boxes marked closed as an unknown man places them onto the shelf as we hear a reporters voice coming from the television nearby showing two teenager killers convicted of the crime as they make faces at the camera. Quick flash to the Television which shows one of their tattoos bearing the words Good Evil in capital letters spread across the his knuckles as the music is solemn telling us of the terrible murder that had just occurred.
Quick flash to the present as we see a picture of a man with a women next to it is a card of one of the boys now grown up indicating it’s his 30th birthday. Behind bars the hand touches it still bearing the tattoo as he begins to tie a knot before we see that he is committing suicide before his body becomes motionless. Shot of the exterior building of Headquarters someone is taking away a suitcase as the camera pans down to two legs walking through a security device as a hand picks up first the handcuffs, then gun and badge before the camera shows us that it’s Lilly all recovered from the recent shooting as she takes in a breath.
Now entering the bullpen, Vera is on the phone while Lilly’s eyes scan around nervously with immediately catches the attention of the interrogation room as a brief flash of Lilly looking scared before a gunshot is heard while Ed falls to the floor. Camera spins around to the window as we see more flashbacks of Ed taking the squad hostages during “Stalker” before he is shot by the sharpshooter by the window. Quick glance at Lilly who appears still to be traumatizing by this whole thing; as Vera announces that she showed up.
Behind him Scotty turns around as Lilly gives a nervous smile; again this is very awkward for her to be here after being shot. Walking closer he calls out Hey the word she had used for him to come in and save her. Scotty then asks if Lilly’s fine as they embrace before telling him that the doctor had just taken the stitches out, he gets sensitive knowing that she must still be in pain. Kat then hugs her as Lilly asks about the city going all out on the boarded up window. After small conversation Scotty asks if she’s ready to come back to work before a loud thud is heard scaring everyone before looking over relived that it was just a box a lady had just dropped. Kat and Vera head into the break room while the lady comes forward telling them that they killed her son Teddy Nimo; who was convicted of the killer back in 1994. Lilly’s heard about the case before being informed that Teddy killed himself, pulling out a note which the lady hands to Rush.
The note reads: I tape their eyes shut so they will stay in the dark forever just like me stop me I am the monster before showing it to Valens. After mentioning that Teddy showed have given this to his lawyer his mother said he never listen while Rush takes a look at a newspaper article. We find out that Teddy couldn’t have written it since he barely could read or write, as Rush tells her they’ll look into it but the mother doesn’t believe her before walking away. Now reading over the note, Rush remarks the note was postmarked from Philly and the other guy is doing time in Graterford so now they wonder who wrote it.
After the credits we see a man walking through the warehouse while the camera moves over to where Valens and Rush are. Valens mentions that the boys were last seen on their bikes in front of Raymes residence bodies were found a day later. Cops ran into the doers at the abandoned pool, the hangout spot of both Dylan and Teddy. Closer up on the pictures of the deceased boys while Valens reads off how they died. Now discussing Dylan and Teddy’s background we see that one was rising in foster care while the other was raised by a crack head single parent.
Hearing Stillman’s voice as he walks over speaking about the case; before telling Lilly he’s glad to have her back and if she’s started counseling yet. Lilly answers not yet while Valens informs that Joe Connelly was the assigned back in 1994 as Rush tells their boss they would have a talk with Dylan. Stillman states he’s already confessed and that witness at the school overheard them bragging the murders not seeing the point about reopening this case before Rush states there was a letter, who sent it as question documents has to hoping they’ll give them some answers. Stillman says this case is closed before Rush asks if there are any open jobs for her, before informing her that counseling isn’t an option he wants her to get it down first.
After he leaves Rush tells Valens she has to go so they won’t think she’s nuts before thanking Valens for what he did. Rush even told IAD what a great hero he was before the two share a laugh before she grabs her keys asking him to ride up to graterford Prison with her. Valens sighs but goes along anyways quick shot of the exterior of the prison before we see flashback of Dylan in 1994 before flashing to him present day. Valens places the note down in front of him before Dylan says he didn’t write that but goes on to ask if they preferred a handwriting sample to save them all time. When Rush asked if he’s heard about what happened to Teddy, Dylan makes a face but Rush isn’t impression in fact she goes on to ask him if shocking people gets him off. He responds with something snarky before repeating the contest of what the note had said but them tells the detectives that him and Teddy were seventeen and stupid believing that they won’t put them away for something they didn’t commit. Flashback to 1994 as Det. Connelly stands among the crowds as Dylan and Teddy stand there while the song: Stay away by Nirvana beings playing. Camera shoots down to the garbage filled pool as a flashback beings with the song: If You Must by Nirvana. Connelly jumps into the abandoned pools with a flashlight looking around before seeing large words written on the side a little further he sees an arm while coming closer for an inspection. After tripping and falling in the mud Connelly gets up seeing the boys all dead with their eyes taped shut before the camera pans up the present day.
Later that night Vera is eating something out a Chinese takeout box, Rush is sitting looking at something why Miller is also eating out of a box. Rush states that Dylan’s handwriting isn’t a match to the letter and there were no forensics leading them to the murder and where the weapon was. At the same time Miller looks over seeing that Vera is eating her Kung Pao Chicken before shooting him a look, Rush doesn’t look up hearing their belittling before Rush discovers that there wasn’t any mud on any of the wheels on the bikes; Which didn’t make sense since Connelly said it had rained the night before as Vera and Miller looked over puzzled. Next we hear a sound of a waterfalls before seeing Stillman, Rush and Valens walking up a flight of steps talking more about the case; how both boys didn’t have licenses and didn’t own a car which was odd since the bodies were dumped not killed at the pool
At the top Rush states they reached out to the boys families got shut down except Jack’s family whom Valens adds lives in Fairmount adding that Miller and Jefferies are having a talk. Stillman agrees to open the case making Valens in charge as the two glance over at each other; Rush isn’t happy that she wasn’t the one in charge. At the Raymes residence they flash back and forth as Mr. Raymes is angery that they had reopened the case, but the detectives have questions where Jack played besides the pool. Mrs. Raymes gets emotional saying she should have stopped Jack from going off the block that day.
