In Cold Case, investigator Lilly Rush comes home each night to two cats—and not just your average, curl-up-at-your-feet felines. One is missing an eye, the other is missing a leg. In fact, the cats are so fractured that Rush’s former boyfriend, ADA Kite, once referred to them as “Tripod” and “Cyclops.”
The fact that Rush (played by Kathryn Morris) has two defective pets is not the result of chance, says Meredith Stiehm, the show’s executive producer. Though they weren’t in the pilot episode, the cats showed up early in season one.
“Lilly’s a rescuer,” Stiehm says, describing the intrepid detective who solves long-dead cases. “She goes to the weakest person and she’s drawn to help. In her work, she’s speaking for the dead, the forgotten and the tossed aside. So
Kathryn thought it was appropriate for Lilly to have pets that otherwise would have been tossed aside or considered defective.”
In real life, both cats—one is a tabby and one is white—are happy and healthy, Stiehm says. The tabby gets makeup to look one-eyed, and the white cat is carefully positioned so viewers can’t see all four of its legs. Originally, the three-legged cat really was missing a leg, but that feline thespian was older, untrained and skittish—and soon retired.
