Not really sure where this belongs so I'll stick it here unless someone shouts. I've made an RSS feed Podcast thingy to host the recent small spate of audio files that have appeared from Kathryn's promo tour of Australia. Hopefully I can add more to it later. This is the URL for it: www.kathryn-morris.co.uk/podcasts/podcasts.rssI'm not expecting it to become a busy thing but we will see how it goes. Let me know what you think.

Great idea! But I can´t download the interviews, because everytime I got an error 404. I don´t know what I´ve done wrong... You've done nothing wrong nessa Thank you for the feedback. I've gone back and looked at the code, and looked more carefully at information about how to create it. Turns out a GUID tag, which I'd just taken to be a useless piece of info, is generally used as yet another copy of the link. Different pieces of software treat these things differently. In Firefox it is OK, the link given is to the MP3, with the subscribe options for things like iTunes. Safari gives more info, and has the "Read more..." link point to that GUID. Looks like Opera, which I think you are using nessa, does the same. My testing was done with Firefox and iTunes, in which it seemed to work OK. I've changed the page to include the links properly in the GUID field. Hopefully that will work better for you nessa. Unfortunately for those that have already subscribed in iTunes, and maybe other apps, you will find that the 4 files are being now treated as new ones so will appear as repeats alongside the existing ones. Sorry about that. I'm still learning. I'll look at it again later when I have more time so there may be more changes to come.

do i have to pay for this??? Errrr.... no. I've just collected the interviews and made them available via another method. I could just have made them available for downloading in the usual way but I thought this way might be interesting, plus it's easier for people if they want to sync them onto iPods with iTunes. It really is much the same as putting them on a webpage but with a specially formated page.

so...how do I download it...? Generally speaking you don't so much download to it as subscribe to it. How you subscribe to it will vary depending on the software you are using. If you have iTunes the easiest thing, or at least a way that will definitely work, is if you copy this address: www.kathryn-morris.co.uk/podcasts/podcasts.rssand go to iTunes and find the Subscribe to Podcast menu item. It's in the Advanced menu on a Mac, not sure about PC. Choose the option and paste the address into the box. Click OK. The item Kathryn Morris Podcast will now be in the Podcasts section of iTunes, a link to which is on the left of the window next to Music, Movies and TV Shows. If you use the Firefox web browser clicking on the address will open a page listing the items in the podcast. Each clickable link is a direct link to the various MP3s so you can right-click Save as... option. At the top of the page there is a drop list with which you can choose how to subscribe to the podcast. Pick iTunes and click the Subscribe Now button. The podcast will now be added to iTunes. The Safari browser acts in much the same way as Firefox but you have more sophisticated options for viewing the articles. If it was an RSS feed from a news site you could tune to being various ways from it just being headlines with a link to the main article to possibly the full text. The iTunes subscribe option is down on the right. For users of Internet Explorer 6 and before I know that the podcast link doesn't do much beyond showing a page of unreadable xml code. Use the iTunes instructions above. I don't know what Internet Explorer 7 does. Can someone else help out with tips for that? If anyone is having problems still please tell us what operating system (Windows 98, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS etc.) and what web browser (Internet Explorer 5, 6 or 7; Firefox; Safari; Opera etc.) and what podcast/RSS feed application (iTunes etc.) you use. Hopefully between the people here we can help out.

Hey RichE-it is downloaded to the iTunes, and when I try to put new episodes on my iPod, it says it synced them, but they're not on there...

I'm sorry lolgirly, I really don't know why it doesn't work. I don't have an iPod to test any of this stuff on. The videos I make should be playable by the iPod, based on the format used, but maybe there is some additional thing I need to do to make them actually work. I don't know what that is though. My aim with the podcast was to make them downloadable and playable in iTunes. As it turns out it also gives a very usable page of download links for those using some web browsers.

Uhm...okay. I think I understand what you said. But it didn't work right after I uploaded the *lolgirlyy* podcast( ), so...that might have something to do with it.

The video clips from the KM Podcast have to be converted to iPod/iPhone format in order to be playable on the iPod. So, whilst they download to iTunes just fine (in the Podcast section of the iTunes library), and can be played through iTunes just fine, in order to get them to properly sync over to the iPod you must: 1) Go into iTunes, go to your Podcast section, select one of the video clips that has been downloaded from RichE's KM Podcast (you will know this because it has the little TV screen icon in the clip's title line) 2) Go up to the Advanced menu option (across the top bar of iTunes), and select "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone" 3) It will then start the conversion process (which will take several minutes depending on the size of the clip) 4) When done, it will place the converted copy in the Movies section of your iTunes Library. You will still have the original under the Podcast section as well. 5) When you next sync your iPod, the converted clips will be placed into the Movies part of your library on the iPod where they will be playable. Of course, you must have a) a video-capable iPod; b) latest version of iTunes for all of this to work. I just went through this exercise this week, and it works great! Just wanted to thank RichE once again for doing the KM Podcast - totally makes my day I can now carry KM in PWoG form on my iPod.

Thanks for the info and advice LillyKat. I'll look into whether that will help me make my files more iPod-friendly in future.
You can also right-click on a podcast entry and select "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone".

Actually, I think the file format you are using IS definitely iPod friendly, RichE, in that when using the "Convert Selection to iPod/iPhone" in iTunes, your files convert perfectly, without issue. When I quickly glanced over the help section on the Apple site (whilst trying to figure this out this week ), some people try to use the conversion functionality in iTunes, yet they still don't get the files to play properly on the iPod. Soooo, however you are coding the mp4s, keep at it 'cause they work just great!

Actually, I think the file format you are using IS definitely iPod friendly, RichE, in that when using the "Convert Selection to iPod/iPhone" in iTunes, your files convert perfectly, without issue. I agree that the basic video and audio format is right, the conversion iTunes is doing isn't really a conversion, just a slight re-packaging. It would take a lot longer if it was more than that. What I want to figure out is if I can do that re-packaging in advance so that my podcasts will transfer to the iPod successfully. Preferably in a way that doesn't break the download capability for everyone else.
