In Step With®...Kathryn Morris
By James Brady
Actress Kathryn Morris—returning for a fifth season this fall on her CBS series Cold Case—graces the big screen this month in a movie with heavy-hitters Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hartnett and Alan Alda. Called Resurrecting the Champ, it has a touching premise. “Samuel Jackson is a homeless boxer living in an alley in Denver,” she said. “He used to be a champ but now is drinking amid the Dumpsters. Fraternity boys come by to box with him, showing off.”
Kathryn’s character is the wife of a “subaverage, mediocre sportswriter,” played by Josh Hartnett. Their marriage is falling apart. She’s older and more accomplished. Hartnett’s character thinks a story on “champ” Jackson could restart his career.
The film was first shown at Sundance, the famous Robert Redford film festival. “It really shook up the dads in the audience,” she said. “They were all crying.”
As for her role as Det. Lily Rush on the long-running Cold Case, “I feel so fortunate,” Kathryn said. “It’s incredible to have an audience so devoted and loyal. Cold Case is on all over the world. I get letters from girls and young women in Germany, Slovenia, Paris.”
Any mail from female cops? “Not so much mail, but a lot of them approach me in malls or while grocery shopping,” the actress said. “They say, ‘You represent us as well as can be done.’ And I think, ‘These women really do this work.’”
Brady's Bits
In addition to acting in this new film, Morris is branching out.“I’m into producing some small films and some TV shows,” she said. “I’ve done all this acting, and now I’m developing ideas of my own.” Writing them? I asked. “Working with a writer. I like to work with a writer.” She has a house up in the hills—in “the Silver Lake area of L.A., a wonderful neighborhood where people out walking their dogs are really walking the dog and not working out a deal.” A British magazine recently reported that when Kathryn was in London, she headed straight for the Sherlock Holmes Museum. True? “I did,” she told me, “but it was closed. So I took pictures, peeked in the window and bought a Sherlock Holmes hat.”
