PART 1
Recap provided by TVFan
The episode opens in a convenience store at night on
November 2, 1985. Janet Lambert is closing down the
store while her 11 year old daughter Susan waits.
Janet keeps looking out the window, and she reminds
Susan that she should hide if her father comes to the
store. Susan wants to go home, but Janet reminds her
that they can't go home ever again. She takes the
trash out, and it cuts to Janet running through the
woods screaming in her underwear. We see everything
through night vision. There is a man following her
with night vision goggles and a rifle. Janet begs for
her life, but he shoots her anyway. The case is filed
under "Lambert, Janet" in the missing persons filing
cabinets.
Present day. Lilly and Scotty walk up to a crime
scene in the woods of a nature preserve. A hiker
found a body buried, and the med alert bracelet says
it's Janet Lambert. There's a slug in her chest
cavity, and her head is missing.
The detectives gather around in the office with the
file pulled. Janet had filed abuse charges against
her husband the same day she disappeared. According
to the file, Susan saw her father at the store the
night her mom went missing, but Lilly points out that
the eleven year old only saw a pair of men's boots
because she was hiding. Susan's father, Leroy, had a
solid alibi that night.
Vera and Jeffries catch up with Leroy. He says that
he was at the bowling alley bar the night Janet
disappeared. He claims that Janet "had it coming"
because of what she did to him. In the flashback,
"Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves plays
on the radio. Janet puts the cereal box on the table,
which upsets Leroy because he wanted a hot breakfast.
Janet doesn't have time because she promised to take
Susan to the mall. Leroy hits her across the face
while Susan watches. Janet decides to fore go the
mall and make Leroy a hot breakfast instead. This
upsets Susan, and she says that Janet always breaks
her promises, so Leroy slaps Susan. Janet picks up
the radio and throws it at him. Leroy explains that
Janet left that day and never came back.
Lilly and Scotty meet with Susan. She realizes that
it could have been anyone's boots that she saw that
night. She looks at the police report, and notices
that it says that "Walking on Sunshine" was playing on
the radio when her father slapped her mother. She
tells Lilly and Scotty that the man in the store that
night was singing the same song. She says the man
left out the back door, and didn't return. Scotty
gets a call from Stillman telling them to meet him at
the woods immediately. At the woods, they find eight
other headless bodies buried.
Back at the station, they line up the three victims'
pictures that they know - Latrice Hicks (2001), Tina
James (1999), and Janet Lambert (1985). All of the
victims were reported missing in November of their
respective years. They rule Leroy out because he was
in jail during some of the time periods. The victims
seem to have nothing in common - different races,
ages, etc. There is no "type" like serial killers
usually have. Stillman sends Vera and Jeffries to the
nature preserve to speak with a possible witness.
The park ranger heard gunshots in the early morning
hours of November 3rd, 1985. He went out to tell the
shooter that there was no hunting in the preserve, but
the guy just stood there and didn't say anything. He
warned him and drove off. The shots were fired around
5am, but Janet went missing around 9pm the night
before, meaning that the killer had her all night.
Scotty meets with Latrice Hicks' sister. She said
goodbye to Latrice at the bus stop and never saw her
again. Latrice had been mugged a few months before
her disappearance, but she fought her attacker.
Meanwhile, Lilly meets with Tina James' father. He
dropped Tina off to go running, and she never
returned. Tina had been a victim of an attempted rape
a few years before the disappearance, but she fought
her attacker with Riot Controlled Tear Gas (used by
marines). It can knock an elephant down in two
seconds. The rapist was blinded for life.
Scotty, Stillman, and Lilly meet up. Scotty points
out that all three known victims were also victims of
other violent crimes. Stillman tells them that the
coroner identified the other six victims, so Lilly
wants to check if they also have violent crimes in
their history. She and Scotty go to the Records
Department. They find that all nine victims had 49
Reports (violent crimes). All of the victims also
fought their attackers. Lilly wants to look at all of
the 49s where the victim fought back, but the clerk
informs her that it will take a while because they are
not computerized. Lilly doesn't seem to mind because
she has to be somewhere anyway.
Lilly goes to the bar where her sister works. Chris
offers her a drink, but Lilly passes, prompting Chris
to comment that she doesn't "take after mom." Lilly
offers Chris the daybed downstairs at her house.
Chris reluctantly accepts, but adds that it's just
until she finds something more permanent.
The next day, Frannie from CSU tells the detectives
that there was no sign of rape/sexual assault with any
of the victims. They all had multiple broken bones
and lacerations in their feet and legs, though. She
says that's consistent with being chased for hours
over rough terrain barefoot. Jeffries found the type
of gun used to kill the women. It's an old Japanese
rifle imported after World War II. There is only one
place in Philly that carries the ammo.
The Army Supply store clerk tells Lilly and Scotty
that he remembers the guy because he bought the same
thing every year. He finds the name - Peter Broadski.
In 1999, he ordered a special issue gas mask that
filters out tear gas. It was the same year that Tina
James was killed. Lilly wonders how he knew about
Tina's tear gas. The clerk never got a good look at
the guy because he made himself hard to recognize. He
remembers Broadski taking some of the glass marbles
used in taxidermy (deer eye). When Broadski was
leaving one time, he stopped and stared at something
on the ceiling - a poster of the constellation Orion.
Orion was a great hunter, and the constellation clears
the Philly sky in November.
Back at the station, the detectives discuss the fact
that all of the victims, except Janet, were taken in
broad daylight. Why would the victims willingly go
with their murderer? Vera joins them and tells them
that Broadski was a cop who left the force in 1984.
So why didn't he take Janet in daylight? Vera points
out that she had Susan with her all day, so Lilly and
Scotty go talk with her again to see if she saw
anything that day.
Susan tells Lil and Scotty that a cop followed them
after they had left the police station (where Janet
filed the report). The cop pulled them over even
though they weren't speeding. He came up to the car,
seemed surprised, simply warned them, and took off.
Scotty's phone rings, and he tells Lil that they found
a survivor from 1987.
Vera and Jeffries meet up with the survivor in the
nature preserve. She was working at a restaurant, and
went out to the parking lot to use drugs. A cop
pulled up and picked her up for disorderly conduct.
She saw his name tag, and it said Broadski. She later
told the police who looked into the incident, but they
thought she was crazy when she mentioned the name. He
brought her to the woods and told her to get out of
the car and run. He called her "Atlantis," which she
explains refers to a children's story about Princess
Atlantis. It was something that helped her escape her
first attempted rape. A car pulled up this time, and
she got away.
