Opening Scene: August 16, 1986

"And We Danced" by the Hooters opens up the season 1 finale.
Mark and Eve Kendall are dancing by the pond at Lover's Lane in the afternoon, drinking wine coolers. They lie down on the towel and begin talking. Eve says to Mark that she'd never leave him. He tells her the same. Eve reassures him that what people say they say because they're jealous. Mark reassures her that they don't have what he and Eve have. Eve can't wait to be an adult so they can go to Paris. They return to Mark's car. Mark sees a guy collecting cans nearby and looks suspicious. The guy nods at Mark. Mark nods back.

Later that night, the car is still there with both doors open. Mark lies on the ground by the driver side door, unconscious. Police lights flash as the cops approach the car and glance at Mark. They immediately move on to the blanket where Eve is laying there dead. She has been stabbed and blood has been coming out of her mouth. Her eyes are open. The box is marked and filed away in the CC room.

2004

Scotty is looking out the window, thinking about Elisa. Stillman comes up to him and brings up an old colleague of Scotty's, Anna Mays. The two used to work together. Scotty doesn't remember her at first, but then he does. In fact, she was a pain. Stillman then asks how things are at home. Scotty tells Stillman Elisa is going to stay with her sister for a while. Stillman comforts Scotty by telling him it will be nice for her to be with someone who can look after her all day. He then gets to the point and brings up an old colleague of Scotty's, Anna. The two used to work together. Scotty doesn't remember her at first, but then he does. In fact, she was a pain.

Anna walks up to Scotty and says hi. Scotty is polite. Lily accompanies Anna. Anna tells them about a man she recently arrested for loitering named Sam Terrance. She then discovered he just served 18 years for the murder of a 15 year old girl in 1986. DNA evidence proved him innocent. Anna points him out and asks him to "join the party". Sam comes up. Stillman introduces himself. Anna asks Sam to tell them about the Eve Kendall murder. He claims he was collecting cans. In the middle of the night, he was picked up and ID'd as a killer. Lily asks who identified him. Anna answers that Eve's boyfriend, Mark Adarns. He was also attacked. Anna says, "She was raped and murdered, and he was left for dead."
Sam says he was a young man when he went in. He looks at Scotty and says, "Just like you." Lily responds by saying, "Well, at least we can find out whose time you've been serving."

Cut to Opening Credits

Lily, Scotty, and Anna are in the CC Room, looking at Eve's file. Eve was 15, stabbed, weapon never recovered. Anna reveals that Lover's Lane was in Fairmount and popular hangour for teens. Scotty jokes, "So you were there a lot." Lily asks why Sam took the fall. Anna reveals the he was half homeless and a boozer and Mark identified him from a line-up. But now it looks like the ID was bogus says Scotty. Lily adds that Mark's shallow stab wounds make her want to talk to him again. Scotty tells Lily that Eve kind of looks like her. Lily looks at the picture for a second. Anna notices something in the box. Terrance claims a green Datzun was parked nearby but no follow-up was done. Lily asks if it was because nobody believed him. Scotty suggests Anna look into it. Lily and Scotty go to see Mark.

Mark is sitting at his desk at work. He is positive he saw the guy. Scotty tells him maybe not. Lily asks him if there were any problems. Mark says no. Lily asks if they had any fights. Mark repeats that there were no problems.

Flashback 1986: The Mall
"Mad About You" by Belinda Carlisle plays in the background. Mark and Eve are at the mall by the movie theater. They are talking about Paris. Mark notices that people stare at her. A young guy collecting tickets at the theater says hi to them as they walk by. Eve says hi back. Mark notices a guy looking at her. He is sitting down smiling at her. Mark tells her they stare because she is beautiful. Mark does not seem bothered by it because he trusts her. They discuss Paris some more. Mark wants to be a writer. Eve asks what they'll do about money. He says, "We hate money." She laughs. He kisses her and says goodbye. Eve looks over at ther guy sitting down and goes to the cashier at the food court to get something.

2004
Lily and Scotty continue their interrogation. Lily asks Mark what happened to him becoming a writer. Mark replies, "Family business" and gets up. Scotty asks Mark if it bothered him that Eve got all the attention. Mark said he loved her and that she was the heartbreak of his life. Losing her hurt him. Lily asks, "First love". Mark looks at Lily and says, "It's weird how much you look like her."

Vera and Jeffries knock on an apartment door. A man answers the door. The flashback image reveals he is the boy collecting tickets from the theater. His name is Wayne Larkin. Jeffries begins to ask him about Eve and how he saw her the day she died. Suddenly, a man sitting down in a chair, signals Wayne to take it outside. The man is Wayne's father. His face is blocked by a lamp shade. Wayne apologizes for his father as he walks outside and closes the door. Wayne says his father has diabetes and gout. Wayne indicates that he saw her at five. He and Eve both work at the mall and were weekend friends. Her boyfriend usually dropped her off and she would take the bus home. They asked about her boyfriend. Wayne claims ahe was a little possessive, but that the feeling wasn't mutual. She was looking around.

Flashback to 1986: The Mall
"Love Somebody" by Rick Springfield plays in the background. Eve is at the department store with her friend Carrie. Wayne is there talking about how late he works and that he can get her in free sometime. The man who stated at her earlier walks by. She struts up to him. He asks if she'll take him up on the club. Eve says yes. She then asks if Carrie can come. He says yes. She gives him her address and tells him her mother leaves at 8:00.

2004
Wayne thinks the guy worked at the music store. He thinks the name might be Max but it was a long time ago.

Lily says that Mark had this girl on a pedestal. She was the world to him. Apparently he was not to her. Jeffries is convinced the older guy took her out at least once. Vera suggests this may have set Mark off. Jeffries says at 16. Lily says it is too vicious of a crime for him. Stillman says "It won't set any records."
Eve's mother comes in. Lily asks her if Eve was out of the ordinary. Her mother claims that was normal, but that she asked to borrow $200 and never said why. She said Mark was nice. Called Eve four times a day. She thought it was kids in love. Lily asks about Max. Eve's mother gets upset.

Flashback to 1986: Eve's House
"Maniac" by Michael Sembello is playing. Eve is at home putting on her makeup. Her mother comes up and tells her she is going to work and to call her before she goes to bed. Eve feels her stomach as if it was hurting. Her mother asks if she should stay home with her. Eve says no. The doorbell rings. Max is there. Eve's mother is mad. She tells him Eve is fifteen and to walk away. He does. Eve gets mad. Her mother tells her she doesn't know the world looks at her. Eve yells back saying she can handle it.

2004
Eve's mother talks about how Eve was going through that horror teen phase. She didn't know what was going with Eve a lot then. She couldn't wait for Eve to reach her twenties so they could be friends again. She says, "we never got there."

The team, along with Anna, now tries to figure out why Eve wanted to borrow $200. They suggest with Max in the picture and her stomach pains, she may have been pregnant. Lily goes back to Mark.

The two in Mark's driveway. He claims she couldn't have been pregnant because they hadn't gone all the way. Lily suggests another guy. Mark says no. Lily says there was another guy. Mark says Eve would never cheat on him. Lily said ,"and if she did, what would you have done?" He said he loved her. Eve says, "Sometimes people kill people they love." Mark asks Lily if she has a soul mate. He says if yes, then she would understand. Mark's wife comes out of the house. He tells her he pick his son up. Mark then tells Lily his wife is beginning to suspect that he loved Eve more than anyone.

Scotty and Jeffries find Max. They give him heat about being an older guy seeking younger girls. He claims she was no babe in the woods. He confirms that he went to her house and mom told him to leave. But she and Carrie arrive at the club an hour later.

Flashback to 1986: Dance Club
"Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats plays at the club. Eve shows up and says hi to Max. He talks about making a music video in Atlantic City. Max says the music store owns sound booths there. Eve is excited. Carrie isn't. Max and Eve then go on the dance floor.

2004
Max said that it was just talk and walks away. Scotty asks him how much booking time in a sound booth costs. He says $200.

Lily, Stillman, Scotty, and Vera all walk together. Stillman says it has been confirmed that Eve was not pregnant and was probably a virgin until the rape. They discuss the video Eve was going to make and how she would become the next Madonna. Lily says that would work on a 15 year old girl. Carrie is now at the station and is waiting upstairs. Vera is with her. Carrie talks about how nice Mark was to her. Vera talks about Atlantic City and how Max said that was not going to happen. Carrie said, "She was going."

Flashback to 1986: Eve's house
"Pretty In Pink" by Psychedelic Furs is playing in the car radio.
Wayne drives up in his car with Eve and Carrie. Wayne does not like Max and is worried about the whole thing. Eve says not to. Carrie warns her to and she shouldn' t that to Mark. Eve says she's not doing anything to Mark but not to tell him. Eve goes into her house, leaving Wayne and Carrie alone. Wayne offers to get Carrie into the movies free to see Top Gun. She says she saw it. He says, "Me too" He then talks about wanting to get away and go to California. He then asks if she wants to go hangout. She says okay.

2004
Carrie says Eve sais she could handle it. Scotty asks what kind of car Wayne drove. She said an old beat up Datzun. Vera, Jeffries, and Anna approach Sam, who is scared at first. They ask him to ID the driver of the Datzun he saw in 1986. He points Wayne out of a copy of pictures.

Lily and Scotty interrogate Wayne. They suggest maybe he wanted Eve but couldn't have her so he settled for the friend. They tell him Sam ID'd the car that night. Wayne said he and Carrie were never at Lover's Lane. She didn't like him. Lily suggested maybe he didn't like that Max was going to take her Atlantic City. He said Max was a jerk. He said he gave Eve the $200 for the statutory rapist and that he wouldn't give it back after she died.
Lily and Scotty are with Max at the mall. Max said Atlantic City never happened.

Flashback to 1986: Outside near a Street
Eve is sitting by a street when Max comes up to her and gives her a kiss. They are going to his car when he notices the sleeping bag she has with her. He asks about it. She says, "We're staying overnight." He says yes but she wouldn't need it. She asks if there's a guest room. He asks her if she is a grownup or a kid. She says she'll need her $200 back. He says it has been spent.

2004
Max said he never saw her again

Lily and Kite arrive at her home. They are inside when the door knocks. Mark is there. He needed to talk. Lily goes outside with him for just a few minutes. Minutes turns into a much longer time. Mark talks about how is marriage is in trouble and he how couldn't stay there. He is comforted by Lily. Unfortunately, Kite is not comforted by Lily's helpfulness, as he leaves. Lily begs him to stay, but he says, "You're busy."

Next Scene
Scotty and Vera are talking to Carrie and they tell her they suspect her because she was seen with Wayne at Lover's Lane. She says no and that she hates Wayne. Scotty asks, "What's there to hate?"

Flashback to 1986: Wayne's apartment
Carrie and Wayne are watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High. His father comes in. Wayne thought her was asleep. His father asks Carrie to come into the bedroom to watch what he is watching. Carrie goes in. Wayne's father comes out and asks Wayne, "Can't you ever bring a good one home." He goes back in and Wayne turns the volume up.

2004
Scotty asks what happened next. Carrie says, "What do you think? Another quick flashback to 1986 is shown where the father closes the door. Then back to the present.
Vera says, And you never reported it."
Carrie replies, "Mom, call the cops. I was drunk at some guy's house and his father brought me into his room. Then there was the humiliation factor. When he was finished, he told me to get my fat ass out of there."
Scotty says, "I get it."

Lily and Scotty confront Wayne. He admits that his father made him bring girls home. He saw Eve after Max left her. He decides he doesn't want to talk anymore.

Flashback to 1986: The Place Where Max Dumped Her
Eve feels bad and wants to make it up to Mark. Wayne gets Eve to go home with him.

2004
Wayne says his father got really excited about Eve. Unfortunately, Eve wasn't as easy. She called his father names and threatened to call the police.
The team is back at headquarters. They now realize that that the overweight person was probably Wayne's father. They now begin to refer to him as Jabba the Hut.
Mark comes in to talk to Lily. He still loves Eve. Lily tells him that they probably might not have had the life he hoped for. He says he is drawn to her. Lily says, "I'm not her."
Lily and Kite are talking. Lily apologizes but Kite breaks up with her anyway. He says she loves her work too much. Lily begs him to stay, but he leaves her with tears in her eyes.

Meanwhile, Vera, Jeffries, and Scotty confront Wayne's father. Wayne's father laughs at the cows Wayne brought him. Jeffries tells him they have DNA from the scene and a bunch of his beer bottles in the hall. The curtain's coming down and Wayne is in jail. His father says he's going to kill him. He throws a beer bottle down and says, "They should have both died!"

Flashback to 1986: Lover's Lane
Wayne and his dad are in the green Datzun. Wayne begs him not to do this. His father wants Eve. Wayne says he can find another pretty girl. His father says, "I want this one. Someone needs to pull off her high horse. His dad goes to Mark's car and grabs Eve. Wayne knocks Mark out with a bottle. He stabs him with a knife but can't kill him. Eve cries out to Wayne for help but he cries as he realizes there is nothing he can do. His father throws her on the towel and rapes her before killing her. Wayne looks on in horror.

Final Segment
"Leather and Lace" by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley plays.
Wayne and his father are arrested. Wayne is being taken to an elevator at the station as Carrie watches with Lily and Stillman. Then and now images of them flash as the elevator door closes. Wayne is in the elevator and manages to smile at her before closes. Mark finally meets Sam Terrance. Then and now images flash as they shake hands. Anna and Lily look on. Then, Mark drives up to Lover's Lane alone and gets out of the car. He looks at the people at the pond. A young girl is looking out at the water. She turns around as if she knew he was there. It is Eve. She smiles and waves to him. Another then and now image of Mark flashes. The younger version is smiling as he waves back, but the older version is sad. Eve's image slowly fades away. Scotty then puts the box back in its place. He then is with Elisa. She talks with him. He then holds her hand and leaves. He is holding back tears as he walks out. Lily is laying in bed with her two cats but she is not asleep. She is thinking about events that have unfolded.
