Opening Scene: August 16, 1986
"And We Danced" by the Hooters opens up the season 1 finale.
Mark and Eve Kendall are dancing by the pond at Lover's Lane in the afternoon, drinking wine coolers. They lie down on the towel and begin talking. Eve says to Mark that she'd never leave him. He tells her the same. Eve reassures him that what people say they say because they're jealous. Mark reassures her that they don't have what he and Eve have. Eve can't wait to be an adult so they can go to Paris. They return to Mark's car. Mark sees a guy collecting cans nearby and looks suspicious. The guy nods at Mark. Mark nods back.
Later that night, the car is still there with both doors open. Mark lies on the ground by the driver side door, unconscious. Police lights flash as the cops approach the car and glance at Mark. They immediately move on to the blanket where Eve is laying there dead. She has been stabbed and blood has been coming out of her mouth. Her eyes are open. The box is marked and filed away in the CC room.
2004
Scotty is looking out the window, thinking about Elisa. Stillman comes up to him and brings up an old colleague of Scotty's, Anna Mays. The two used to work together. Scotty doesn't remember her at first, but then he does. In fact, she was a pain. Stillman then asks how things are at home. Scotty tells Stillman Elisa is going to stay with her sister for a while. Stillman comforts Scotty by telling him it will be nice for her to be with someone who can look after her all day. He then gets to the point and brings up an old colleague of Scotty's, Anna. The two used to work together. Scotty doesn't remember her at first, but then he does. In fact, she was a pain.
Anna walks up to Scotty and says hi. Scotty is polite. Lily accompanies Anna. Anna tells them about a man she recently arrested for loitering named Sam Terrance. She then discovered he just served 18 years for the murder of a 15 year old girl in 1986. DNA evidence proved him innocent. Anna points him out and asks him to "join the party". Sam comes up. Stillman introduces himself. Anna asks Sam to tell them about the Eve Kendall murder. He claims he was collecting cans. In the middle of the night, he was picked up and ID'd as a killer. Lily asks who identified him. Anna answers that Eve's boyfriend, Mark Adarns. He was also attacked. Anna says, "She was raped and murdered, and he was left for dead."
Sam says he was a young man when he went in. He looks at Scotty and says, "Just like you." Lily responds by saying, "Well, at least we can find out whose time you've been serving."
Cut to Opening Credits
Lily, Scotty, and Anna are in the CC Room, looking at Eve's file. Eve was 15, stabbed, weapon never recovered. Anna reveals that Lover's Lane was in Fairmount and popular hangour for teens. Scotty jokes, "So you were there a lot." Lily asks why Sam took the fall. Anna reveals the he was half homeless and a boozer and Mark identified him from a line-up. But now it looks like the ID was bogus says Scotty. Lily adds that Mark's shallow stab wounds make her want to talk to him again. Scotty tells Lily that Eve kind of looks like her. Lily looks at the picture for a second. Anna notices something in the box. Terrance claims a green Datzun was parked nearby but no follow-up was done. Lily asks if it was because nobody believed him. Scotty suggests Anna look into it. Lily and Scotty go to see Mark.
Mark is sitting at his desk at work. He is positive he saw the guy. Scotty tells him maybe not. Lily asks him if there were any problems. Mark says no. Lily asks if they had any fights. Mark repeats that there were no problems.
Flashback 1986: The Mall
"Mad About You" by Belinda Carlisle plays in the background. Mark and Eve are at the mall by the movie theater. They are talking about Paris. Mark notices that people stare at her. A young guy collecting tickets at the theater says hi to them as they walk by. Eve says hi back. Mark notices a guy looking at her. He is sitting down smiling at her. Mark tells her they stare because she is beautiful. Mark does not seem bothered by it because he trusts her. They discuss Paris some more. Mark wants to be a writer. Eve asks what they'll do about money. He says, "We hate money." She laughs. He kisses her and says goodbye. Eve looks over at ther guy sitting down and goes to the cashier at the food court to get something.
2004
Lily and Scotty continue their interrogation. Lily asks Mark what happened to him becoming a writer. Mark replies, "Family business" and gets up. Scotty asks Mark if it bothered him that Eve got all the attention. Mark said he loved her and that she was the heartbreak of his life. Losing her hurt him. Lily asks, "First love". Mark looks at Lily and says, "It's weird how much you look like her."
Vera and Jeffries knock on an apartment door. A man answers the door. The flashback image reveals he is the boy collecting tickets from the theater. His name is Wayne Larkin. Jeffries begins to ask him about Eve and how he saw her the day she died. Suddenly, a man sitting down in a chair, signals Wayne to take it outside. The man is Wayne's father. His face is blocked by a lamp shade. Wayne apologizes for his father as he walks outside and closes the door. Wayne says his father has diabetes and gout. Wayne indicates that he saw her at five. He and Eve both work at the mall and were weekend friends. Her boyfriend usually dropped her off and she would take the bus home. They asked about her boyfriend. Wayne claims ahe was a little possessive, but that the feeling wasn't mutual. She was looking around.
Flashback to 1986: The Mall
"Love Somebody" by Rick Springfield plays in the background. Eve is at the department store with her friend Carrie. Wayne is there talking about how late he works and that he can get her in free sometime. The man who stated at her earlier walks by. She struts up to him. He asks if she'll take him up on the club. Eve says yes. She then asks if Carrie can come. He says yes. She gives him her address and tells him her mother leaves at 8:00.
2004
Wayne thinks the guy worked at the music store. He thinks the name might be Max but it was a long time ago.
Lily says that Mark had this girl on a pedestal. She was the world to him. Apparently he was not to her. Jeffries is convinced the older guy took her out at least once. Vera suggests this may have set Mark off. Jeffries says at 16. Lily says it is too vicious of a crime for him. Stillman says "It won't set any records."
Eve's mother comes in. Lily asks her if Eve was out of the ordinary. Her mother claims that was normal, but that she asked to borrow $200 and never said why. She said Mark was nice. Called Eve four times a day. She thought it was kids in love. Lily asks about Max. Eve's mother gets upset.
Flashback to 1986: Eve's House
"Maniac" by Michael Sembello is playing. Eve is at home putting on her makeup. Her mother comes up and tells her she is going to work and to call her before she goes to bed. Eve feels her stomach as if it was hurting. Her mother asks if she should stay home with her. Eve says no. The doorbell rings. Max is there. Eve's mother is mad. She tells him Eve is fifteen and to walk away. He does. Eve gets mad. Her mother tells her she doesn't know the world looks at her. Eve yells back saying she can handle it.
2004
Eve's mother talks about how Eve was going through that horror teen phase. She didn't know what was going with Eve a lot then. She couldn't wait for Eve to reach her twenties so they could be friends again. She says, "we never got there."
The team, along with Anna, now tries to figure out why Eve wanted to borrow $200. They suggest with Max in the picture and her stomach pains, she may have been pregnant. Lily goes back to Mark.
The two in Mark's driveway. He claims she couldn't have been pregnant because they hadn't gone all the way. Lily suggests another guy. Mark says no. Lily says there was another guy. Mark says Eve would never cheat on him. Lily said ,"and if she did, what would you have done?" He said he loved her. Eve says, "Sometimes people kill people they love." Mark asks Lily if she has a soul mate. He says if yes, then she would understand. Mark's wife comes out of the house. He tells her he pick his son up. Mark then tells Lily his wife is beginning to suspect that he loved Eve more than anyone.
Scotty and Jeffries find Max. They give him heat about being an older guy seeking younger girls. He claims she was no babe in the woods. He confirms that he went to her house and mom told him to leave. But she and Carrie arrive at the club an hour later.
