I think the writing in Cold Case is well above average, but the thing that totally grabs me is the then-and-now views of characters, especially when there's a couple of decades in between.
The resemblances seem much too close for them to be different actors, but they look too natural for it to be special effects makeup.
How do they do it? My only guess is that they use family members, e.g. mother/daughter pairs. Does anyone know?

they pick two different actors/ actress that resemble each other one old one younger, it's hard work and a lot of time researching to find the perfect combination.

They really do an awesome job. There are times when I would swear the two people are related! Major kudos to the casting department!
