I think for next season it would be great if we not only did reviews, but analyses of episodes as well. Cause, alot of episodes addresss important historical/social themes in addition to the drama, and it's interesting to see how the show approaches, handles, and uses cases to symbolize these themes. The best examples of that this season were "A Time To Hate" (with the anti-gay attitudes of the turbulent 60's) and "The Letter" (with both the Depression and racism of the era). One of the things that attracted me to Cold Case (besides the music ;D) is how alot of the cases are really "signs of the time": for example, "Greed" showed the wealth obsession of the 80's, "Volunteers" captured the soul of Vietnam protest, and "Disco Inferno" showed the Disco fad of the 70's. The only time I find Cold Case episodes uninteresting is when the story doesn't really connect with the time period. But that's just me. Anyway, I apologize if there's already a thread on here for analyses, but if not, I think it's a great idea to do for season 2. It would provide for very interesting discussion, anyway.

Actually, I prefer the combination of episodes that define the time period and those that don't. "Disco Inferno" was excellent for really covering disco. On the other hand, episodes like Maternal Instincts, Glued, and Gleen didn't really cover the 1980s. Greed depicted the 1980s perfectly. It's important to remember that not everyone was involved in the fads. Not everyone was a yuppie like in "Greed". Some were average people, like in "Gleen". A mix of the two types is what counts. But the ones with nostalgia are really interesting.

Good idea saywhatknow. I think these would provide for very interesting discussions.
I guess we could just post them here in the general discussion forum. What do you think CCFan and Naj?

Yes, I'm up for those that have a talent for doing this. I'm sure there are many here who would love to have an 'analyzing' aspect to the episodes and this forum would be a great place to do that. I love reading them and seeing what people get out of an ep. ~Naj

I actually did an analysis from this season saywhatknow. It was about Lilly's relationship with Kite, which was 'the thing' after the season finale. Im pretty sure it's in this topic (general discussion) somewhere. I'll see if i can dig it up. I would love to see more for next season too.

I'd love to do it. I have a sort of way with picking things apart and noticing details. If there's gonna be an official thread somewhere, I'm in.

I went a lookin' and i found 3 analysis on the board from season one. 2 are in General; one is called Lilly's Love, started by me,a nd the other is Season 1 Reviews, by TVFan. There is another one, in Episodes, called Hubris reviews (i think) by me.

Here's a question that might get analysis on the roll. Why do think people like CC - what's its special appeal?
I heard an interesting analysis by a stranger once. She said CC was the only show that gave victims a voice.
What do you think?

This is a great question InsideR. I can't speak for the general audience, but I know why I was originally drawn to the show and why I continue to watch it. Last summer, I started watching the JB shows (in reruns) for the first time. I instantly liked CSI and Without A Trace (both followed a long-time fav JB show The Amazing Race). When I saw the ads for Cold Case, I figured I'd check it out b/c it too came out of the JB factory. So, I tuned in for the premiere and liked the show. It seemed to mirror WaT more closely than CSI (which gets too procedural and technical for my tastes sometimes), so I stuck with it. To be honest, I wasn't a fan of the few eps that followed the premiere, and I missed a bunch (that I've since caught up on) after that due to the annoying football problem. As CC's season went on, it got better and better. The stories were more compelling and the characters became more interesting. "Glued" was a masterpiece IMO, and I decided that I didn't want to miss an ep after it aired. But, what keeps me coming back week after week is basic good storytelling and a fantastic lead character. Lilly is a puzzle, and the writers do a nice job of solving it piece by piece. We've seen cases affect her personally and emotionally. Yet, we still don't know what makes her tick. She's a strong, independent, feminine character that doesn't use her sex appeal to get ahead. She wears normal clothes that don't unprofessionally expose her skin, her hair is thrown up (like I would suspect most cops' would be), and her make-up looks little to non-existant. This is a refreshing role model for woman instead of the usual drop dead gorgeous, sexy female character seen on TV (I know, it's a man's world ). Not to say that Lilly/Kathryn isn't beautiful (b/c she is), she's beautiful in an attainable and "girl next door" way. She's also flawed, and the writers show us that even though she has this great career, she doesn't have it all together (a common myth perpetuated in Hollywood). The stories are compelling and I know that I really feel for the victims and their loved ones. Over the course of the hour, you make a connection to their plight. You feel the justice that they feel when the cases are solved. Cold Case is a nice mix of procedural and character driven dramas. The balance between the two keeps me watching week in and week out.

"Analyses" seems to be spelled wrong. It should be spelled with an "i", and not an "e".
* boxman blows the dust off this thread *
Wow. Look at the date of this. It went cold back in November '04. That's...let's see...sixteen months ago. Let's give it a look again....
After watching this show for the past few months, I've recently come to this conclusion: Cold Case is less of a detective show, and more of a show that examines human behaviour through the framework of a detective show.
Cold Case does not just examine any kind of human behaviour either. It focuses on 'deviant' behaviour; and more importantly, how 'normal' people deviate from and sometimes violate societal norms.
More to follow.

This show is brilliant at exposing human behavior! Great observation boxman. This is why I tend to enjoy the psychological episodes the most. Delving into human nature and behavior under the guise of detective work is just a great way to describe the show's under current. When you first see it, it seems to be a simple detective show, but underneath it's really a excellently executed look at the human pysche. Great catch boxman! ETA - Thanks for reviving this thread!
