I typed this in my free time. I think it's a big improvement over my first one.
Cruelty
A Fanfic by Falling
May 1st, 2002
"Bother" By Stone Sour plays in the background as we cut to a street, and a school in the distance. A pizza place and a playground are across the street. A young man, 14, is walking by himself. A young blonde teenager walks up behind him and pushes him onto the street.
Young Man: What’s up, Johnny?
John: Damn it Paul, I’m just trying to go to school.
Paul: Oh, exweeze me Johnny, I’ll be more gentle next time.
He slaps him hard on the back and walks on. John continues to school, and then we pull back and up. We cut to the same street, at night. John is lying under a metal sign, his head bleeding and on a rock. We cut to a detective carrying a box that says "Parner, J." on it. He places it in the rack. We cut to present day.
Rush is talking to Kite, he laughs, and leaves. Rush walks over to Valens.
Valens: Dinner plans?
Rush: Hah, none of your business.
Valens: I enjoy a little kite-flying myself on the weekends.
Rush laughs and Stillman catches up to them.
Stillman: Rush, do you remember a murder from ’02, John Parner?
Rush: I think so. Beat to death, right?
Stillman: That’s the one. We got new direction. A witness says he remembers a previous beating from 2000, and he got some names.
Rush: Music to my ears.
Stillman: He’s over in the lobby, says he’s gotta hurry.
Rush: I’ll try to keep if brief, boss.
Rush smiles and heads to the lobby. We see an 17-year old sitting there.
Rush: Hi, Lilly Rush, homicide. You say you might have something on a case?
Man: Um, yes. Oh, my name is Mark Frank. In summer 2000, I saw the kid get beat up, real bad. I knew some of the guys, they went to my school.
Rush: Can you tell us what you saw?
Mark: …okay.
We cut to 2000. "Spit It Out" by Slipknot is playing. Mark is in the pizza place looking out. He sees John walking, when a group of people come up from an alley next to the school. They push him to the ground, kick and punch him, while John yells out. Mark only watches wide-eyed. They beat him some more and eventually run off. Mark turns away. We return to the present.
Mark: I shouldn’t have looked away. I realize that now. But what was I gonna do? I was just a kid. Those guys were 2 grades ahead of me. I hope this helps solve that poor kid’s case.
Rush: Thanks for your time, Mark. We’ll be sure to tell you if anything comes up.
Mark leaves, and Rush heads back to the office. Stillman hands her a paper.
Rush: What’s this?
Stillman: The names. I got Vera and Jeffries looking for them, I suggest you start with the kid’s parents.
Rush: I’ll do that.
We see Rush outside a blue house, she knocks on the door. A middle-aged man opens the door.
Rush: Hi, are you Mr. Parner?
Man: Yes, why?
Rush: Lilly Rush, homicide.
Parner: This is about John, right?
Rush: We’re re-opening the case. We think we have an idea of who might’ve killed your son.
Parner: Come in then, maybe I can help you narrow it down.
Rush: Thank you, Mr. Parner.
Parner: You can just call me Rick. I do remember, earlier that day. John was talking to some older boy…
He fades off and we cut to 2002. "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm plays in the background. Mr. Parner is inside reading a book outside, and he notices John up the street.
John: Would you just drop it? It’s not important.
Boy: Oh come on man, you know it’s true!
John: Screw you.
Boy: No need for the profanity Johnny!
John: Would you just leave me alone? I’m doing the best I can to ignore you, you have to follow me home?
Boy: People will think we’re in love.
John: I’ll get the stuff for you tomorrow, alright?
Boy: I hope so. It’s both of us if you mess this up.
John: I’d rather me and you, than just me.
Boy: Don’t even joke around about that crap John.
John: I’m hysterical.
Boy: Just go make some more and we’ll be set.
John: I can’t just make them. I need some money.
Boy: Here’s 20. Hurry it the hell up.
John: This should be enough.
John’s Dad looks in confusion. We cut to the present.
Parner: I had no idea what they were talking about. Still don’t. But I knew the boy. Devin Crandal.
Rush: Thanks so much for this. I know how hard it’s been.
Rush gets up to leave.
Parner: Rush, um, Lilly. One more thing? Give whoever did this hell.
Rush nods, and leaves the house. We cut to the school, where Vera and Jeffries have just arrived. It flashes back to 2002, then the present day school. The sign has been replaced.
Vera: So what is it we’re lookin’ for here?
Jeffries: Some of the kids on that list still go here.
Vera: After 2 years?
Jeffries: Did you ever go to school? It’s got one of them multi-grade programs.
Vera: Didn’t have them when I was a kid.
Jeffries: I bet not.
Vera smiles, they enter the school, then head to the Dean’s office.
Vera: Dean Carson?
Dean: Yes?
Jeffries: Jeffries, this is Vera. Homicide.
Dean: At this school? I think I’d remember if anything like that happened.
Vera: Remember John Parner?
Dean: Would you keep it down? We don’t need first graders knowing this school is…well you know what I mean.
Jeffries: You mean, a school that has students who believe beating up classmates is a passtime.
Dean: If John had a problem with it, he should have come to me.
Vera: So your saying for 2 years he was getting beat up at your school and A. You never saw it, and B. He never told you? I don’t buy it.
Dean: There isn’t anything to buy. I know what I know.
Vera: And we know that there was a pending lawsuit on the school after John’s murder. I know that "One of those schools" doesn’t need an ugly lawsuit like that.
Jeffries: None of them do, do they?
Dean: Okay! You’ve made your point, I’ll tell you what I saw if you’ll just stop!
Vera: We’re listening.
Dean: Paul tried to catch up with John, a week before the murder. There must’ve been more beatings, no one apologizes for things they did 2 years ago.
We cut to 2002. "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback is in the background. Dean Carson is in his office, and he sees John walking alone. Paul walks up behind him.
Paul: John, I gotta tell you something.
John: Okay?
Paul: Listen, man…I’m sorry about the other day.
John: No you aren’t…you just don’t want me to get you in trouble. I haven’t told, I never will. Stop pissing yourself.
John tries to walk on, but Paul keeps behind him.
Paul: John, I’m serious. I don’t know why we do that crap.
John: You’re all total jerks and don’t know when to leave someone alone?
Paul: John, don’t be like that.
John: What are you, my girlfriend? Leave me alone!
John continues, Paul stays, looking upset. We cut to the present.
Dean: I just assumed it was kids being difficult. Is there anything else?
Jeffries: That’s fine. Thank you for your time.
They get up and we cut to Rush and Valens, outside a laundry mat. They enter, and Paul is there. He flashes to 2002, then 2000, then to himself.
Rush: Paul Colston?
Paul: Can I help you?
Rush: Detectives Rush, Valens. We’re here to ask you some questions about John Parner.
Paul: John Parner? Christ, I haven’t seen him since, what’s it been, 2 years?
Valens: Remember beating him up?
Paul: Hold on. Are you assuming I killed him or something? Look, all we did was kick him around for a little fun. But kill him? Why would I do that?
Rush: You tell us. Cause it’s ironic, huh Paul? Kid you been whaling on for 2 years dies. Massive trauma to the head and torso. Remember any of that fun kicking going too far?
Valens: I’d say we got reasonable evidence. Enough to put you in a holding cell for a few hours, round up a few of your gang buddies.
Paul: I did beat that kid up, okay? I’m not denying that. But I didn’t kill him.
Rush: Prove it.
Paul: Did anyone tell you how that kid snubbed me when I tried to apologize?
Valens: We heard that. I still don’t see how that makes you look any better. You got anything else?
Paul: He was acting a little weird later that day. I caught up with him after school, to talk about Devin.
Valens: Devin? Devin Crandall?
Paul: That’s him. He was up to something with John…
