I saw this movie for the first time this week ... and ... well, I didn't quite get it. LOL! I feel bad admitting this because I am a horror film/sci-fi/thriller fan, but I was just totally confused through the whole thing - especially at the end ... SPOLIER SPACE * * * * * * * * * * I think I get the religious persecution / revenge / dark world stuff, but I guess I still don't get why mom was left in the "other" world at the end ...? Any SH fans out there who would like to share their thoughts on the film? It'll re-air on my STARZ! channel for a while, so I'll probably watch it again ...

Oh, I had high hopes for this one too, and I was very disappointed with it. It just didn't make much sense to me.

Believe it or not, I saw Silent Hill during a cross-country flight! I thought it was really odd for the airline to play it. The jet I was on had individual flat-panel screens for each passenger, mounted on the back side of the seat in front of them. A couple of families that had small kids put blankets over the monitors so the kids wouldn't see the images from the movie!

A couple of families that had small kids put blankets over the monitors so the kids wouldn't see the images from the movie! That is odd and possibly verges on illegal. The film will have an age rating so putting it on in front of people under the age limit is a piece of very questionable judgment at best. Surprised the parents didn't complain and get it turned off.

Ooooh I loved this movie!
And I actually understood it!
SPOILERS . . . . .
. . . . .
.
*whew*
First of all the movie is far different from the games. Now what I'm about to say is long, and based on theory, but with alot of evidence (some of it from the games)
For the ending, Sharon pretty much merged with "Dark Alessa" who may be in fact one of the Town's resident Gods. Specifically the Red God, Xuchilbara. In the games Xuchilbara is the God of Rebirth and Salvation.
Speak. I am the Crimson One. The lies and the mist are not they but I. You all know that I am One. Yes, and the One is I.
Believers hearken to me! Twenty score men and seven thousand beasts. Heed my words and speaketh them to all, that they shall ever be obeyed even under the light of the proud and merciless sun.
I shall bring down bitter vengeance upon thee and thou shalt suffer my eternal wrath.
The beauty of the withering flower and the last struggles of the dying man, they are my blessings.
Thou shalt ever call upon me and all that is me in the place that is silent.
Oh, proud fragrance of life which flies towards the heart. Oh Cup which brims with the whitest of wine, it is in thee that all begins.
The passage above is from "The Book of Crimson Ceremony" one of the three items needed to perform the ceremony of the resurrection of the dead.
But, alas there's no resurrecting of the dead in the movie. Which leads to my next point. The name Xuchilbara may be a play on the word Xilpaba which means "Place of Fears" (which describes Silent Hill in a nutshell.) Xuchilbara is also known as the Spirit of the Mist.
"When the White Breath is found I shall dedicate this thing Oh Spirit of the Mist Grant us Fortune Eternal"
Onto the movie! When Dark Alessa possesses Rose, pay attention to how Dark Alessa comes out of Rose. As blood! And when the blood hits the ground it forms the nightmare world in which Alessa gets her revenge on the cult people. But, anyways it seems that Dark Alessa/Xuchilbara possesses Sharon. And keeps Sharon and Rose in the Misty world.
Another possibility?
"The Rose of Sharon is said to take her seat next to God in Heaven, and in the movie it was stated "Mother is God in the eyes of a child."
And if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I LOVED this movie, especially the ending, but it was so sad. The sacrifices to save your child... And then if it doesn't work out. Damn, ha? If you actually like confusing movies (and I do! Although I didn't find this one too bad as long as I didn't get sucked in too much by the symbolism) then please watch The Dark Hours. Seriously, it's awesome! But totally screwed up. I really want other ppl's opinions on it... I think I've posted (somewhere) about it before.

The ending was very bitter-sweet.
SPOILERS OMG!
. . . . . . . . .
I mean Sharon and Dark Alessa (who merged they might as well be a new whole Alessa.) finally gets to be with "God" ("Mother is God in the eyes of a child.") but at the same time Rose is stuck alone.
