Barney Productions is proud to present Modern Missionary as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC. Based on the real life experiences of writer and actor Julia Barnett, Modern Missionary is directed by Andrew Garman and produced by Diane Neal. Barney Productions will donate 10% of its proceeds to the African Children's Choir. Exact show dates and venue location to be released when available.
Africa in the 90's was a land plagued with corruption, death and abandonment. Modern Missionary is the story of a beautiful, mid-western American woman on her harrowing (and sometimes humorous) journey helping to save disenfranchised children whose numbers were mounting. Julia's time on the Dark Continent is presented as the memories of a woman who, through her experiences with those around her, found an abiding desire to care for her fellow man and an unexpected love.
Written by actress and International Choir Operations Director for the African Children's Choir, Julia Barnett, Modern Missionary takes the audience on a voyage through many of the personal challenges she experienced during her years in Africa. Julia has acted in many New York based TV shows as well as had starring roles in several films in addition to her extensive theater career. Modern Missionary is her first foray into playwriting.
The director, Andrew Garman, is a familiar presence in the NY theater and television scene. His credits as an actor include Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, television and film (see attached bio). Andrew has an MFA in theater from Columbia University and is a member of The Actor's Studio.
Producer, Diane Neal, is best know for her current acting role as the ADA on NBC's Law and Order: SVU. Now in her fourth season, Diane has also guest starred on numerous other TV shows, starred in her own TV pilots, lead the BIOS in feature and independent films and appeared on stage in New York theater productions. Diane is an alumnus of Atlantic Theater Company Acting School.
