In an exclusive photo shoot and cover story appearing in this week's TV Guide magazine, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's Mariska Hargitay opens up about her and husband Peter Hermann's first and brand-new venture at parenthood. In this TVGuide.com Insider supplement, Hargitay shares her additional thoughts on....
What's in a Name?
Mariska explains why her newborn son, August Miklos Friedrich Hermann, is going to have lots of fun learning to spell his moniker.
"My husband has five names — Karl Peter Frederic Albert Hermann," says Mariska. "He wanted to do that to our kid, but I'm a big fan of first, middle and last, so I said he could have one extra." And so, it was: On June 28, August Miklos Friedrich Hermann made his debut.
Miklos is the actual first name of Mariska's father, Mickey Hargitay. The Hungarian-born Mr. Universe was nicknamed Mickey when he married actress Jayne Mansfield and became a film star himself. Friedrich, the German form of Frederick, was the name of Peter's paternal grandfather.
But who is August? "Everyone is assuming it's because we were married in August, which is part of it," Mariska explains. "Peter's birthday is also in August and it is our favorite month, but it's also a name that has been in Peter's family for 200 years. We wanted to give him a European name, something literary and artistic, like the Swedish playwright August Strindberg and the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It's a strong name that means 'majestic' and 'revered' and 'noble,' like a peaceful ruler."
So August it was. "We wanted to give him something different," Mariska concludes with a laugh. "Not crazy weird, like Burlap."
The Confidence Woman
She busts perps for a living. Do you honestly think Mariska Hargitay is going to have a problem with diaper duty?
"We've been blessed to have two months off work after having a baby, so we've been doing everything together," Mariska says. "But Peter pulled his back and he couldn't get up for two days, so I did everything by myself. It was awesome — I felt more confident and all of a sudden I notice I'm holding [the baby] different. And I was the ninja warrior of diapering! Peter and I always give kudos to whoever can change the baby's diaper without August crying. He was like, 'You change him and he doesn't even cry.'"
In other words, mother-of-the-year associations, you have a new candidate. "I'm just going to say it," Mariska declares. "I'm great with kids. Everyone wants me to be their kids' godmother." Her secret weapon? Humor. "I can make any kid laugh," she insists. "Peter and I are a united front on that. In our family, we don't do whining."
She even has a trick up her sleeve for children who are lobbying for attention. "If they're crying but they're really OK, I say to them, 'C'mon, give me something more. I'm not buying it'" — and they are taken back, and then they laugh. Kids like the truth, and they know when they're busted. Then they feel seen, really seen, and then they feel safe. And it is all about feeling safe."
Baby Love
Hargitay's pals present the gifts that keep on giving.
"People have been so generous, so beautiful, so celebratory of this child," Mariska says with a happy sigh. "I felt so loved. And now, you don't even care if people like you; all you care about is if they love your baby."
Apparently many do. "The presents?" They have been awesome, cute, amazing," the actress exclaims. SVU guest star Marcia Gay Harden sent baskets of flowers even before August was born. Julianna Margulies, who worked with Mariska on ER, knit August a sweater. ("I cried when I saw it," Mariska confesses. "It's the cutest thing I've ever seen.") Jane Leeves' husband, skateboarder Marshall Coben, sent over an autographed board. And August also has a wet suit to match the one his dad bought when he learned to surf this summer. "I look at it and cry," Mariska confesses. "You want to leave these generous people money in your will because they actually invested time in your child. I must have done something right."
Nursery's Cool
Born in Los Angeles, August is heading to New York City this fall. Here's how Mariska pimped his crib!
"We have baby furniture by interior designer David Netto, and the room has birch wallpaper," she shares. "The ceiling is going to be this big beautiful blue sky that is a giant print of a photograph that Peter took. And we found this big old antique toy airplane at store, and we're going to hang it from the ceiling. It's so fabulous, I can't wait for him to get there!"
