One night the two took a walk together in an effort to get their minds out of work. Lilly then felt his warm hand in hers as many emotions seemed to cross her face. Biting her lip, she didn’t speak but continued to walk along with him. Somehow the two ended up seeing a movie together; which had them laughing at the end.

After coming out of the cinema; Scotty turned and watched Lilly as she laughed.

“I like when you do that” he said

“What”

“Laughing, you look beautiful when you do” Scotty said. Lilly had almost forgotten what it was like to laugh, but this made her feel better. Walking along, the two breathed in the cold air and taking back to enjoy life for once. Back at her place, Lilly watched as the snow came down lightly taking in its beauty.

“Hey” he whispered placing his hand on top of hers.

“I never realized how beautiful snow was” she murmured” We both work and don’t notice these things”.
Scotty smiled as he moved closer “Maybe we could do this twice a week”
“You asking me out” Lilly asked.
“No, just two friends. Unless you want us to be, I wouldn’t say no”.
Lilly could see the look in his eye, but knew that he had left the door opened just in case. For now they were just friends. Before she had known, it was midnight.
“See you at 7” Scotty said before moving his way to the door before leaving. A smile crept onto Lilly’s face and she went upstairs to sleep.

By 7am, the two were walking together as Scotty bought her coffee. On the way there, he spotted Kat and Vera together.
“What’s that about” he asked
Lilly grinned” Love is blind” looking at them kissing” I wonder what Toni would think about that”.
As the two detectives walked along holding hands, Scotty felt calmer being with someone he truly cared about. She wasn’t just his partner, but someone he could protect and love. Both knew they wanted to be with each other; but it just wasn’t right.
Back at headquarters, the two were back burying themselves with work. Even during the week, it was hard to do anything. One night, Lilly knew she needed to talk sometime for herself. Her therapist even agreed about it; as she went into a yoga class. Somehow after getting home, her phone rang loudly.

“Hey, you okay” came a familiar voice.
Lilly smiled and she snuggled into blankets” Just about to go to bed”.
Scotty was about to do the same” Glad you were there to help me. I don’t think anyone could”.
That made Lilly feel even better, she knew that she wasn’t some useless person. In fact they were both there to help each other most importantly never gave up hope. After he had hung up, the two detectives fell into a deep sleep.

As a month had passed, Scotty was trying to ward away his negative thoughts. Somehow they just kept on coming back; one thing that he wasn’t going to do was kill him. One night, Lilly held him as he cried hard in her lap.

When Scotty finally lifted up his head, his eyes peering into a sea of blue. With one motioned Lilly felt his lips upon hers. Deep down she wanted for the longest time to be with him, but an inner voice was telling her just to go home. Now ignoring that, Lilly pulled softly away as she gently wiped the tears away from his face.

“I love you” Scotty whispered though his tears before pulling her into am embrace. Inside Lilly’s heart began to beat faster, but she knew after this it was clear they were meant to be together. What did it mean for their friendship, maybe it was just up to fate?

Not long after he had told her, Lilly watched as he got his jacket on and slammed the door to his apartment.
“Where are you going” she called out
“To the gym”
Lilly caught up with him “Why now” but he didn’t answer. Still dazed she stood there in the snow before walking home. On the way there, her eyes caught the sight of Vera and Kat on a date. Throughout all that bickering, the two really did love each other. As they kissed some more, Lilly was still confused about everything that had just happened.

By the next morning, Scotty was late; very late. In fact when he showed up looking rather tired; she grew worried.
“Where have you been”?
“At the gym”
Lilly’s eyes widened” All night, this is crazy Scotty. You need to stop this”.
He got up and looked straight at her” If I stop I can’t prevent someone else from hurting you”.
It was at that point she knew his problem, Scotty felt a deep sense of weakness inside. Though on the outside he was strong, inside was quite different. Lilly could relate; but was scared he might do something bad.

“Scotty, you don’t have to do this for me”
He turned around” Don’t you get it Lil, it ain’t about you. I’m the weak one”.
Lilly was taken aback” First you said it was about me, now it isn’t. You know you can tell me”.
“Shut it Lil” Scotty yelled ignoring the looks from both Kat and Vera at the same time.

The day was turning out badly, in fact in the middle of it Scotty had left. Now as he was lifting some weights, he had remembered something from his past. No one was ever going to make him feel weak again. Now adding more weights, Scotty went above his limit and was taking a serious risk to himself.

By 9pm, Lilly had arrived she saw him working out furiously.

“You got to stop this”.

“Leave me alone Lil”

“I can’t not when you are hurting yourself”.

Scotty pushed up the weights struggling to be strong; he knew this was going too far but that didn’t matter anymore” Don’t you have a case you’ve already buried yourself into”?
Lilly crossed her arms” Not today” before anger swept though his veins. Almost immediately Scotty put it down and breathed out heavily. His arms hurt like hell but pain wasn’t about to be shown.
“You are not weak Scotty, in fact I feel protected with you”.
He breathed out harder” You don’t know me Lil”.
She handed him a towel” I think I do Scotty, more than you think”.

With that Scotty wiped the sweat off his face before heading over to another machine. Lilly knew her partner was in crisis but couldn’t stand to see him like this. Now taking charge she stood in from of him” Get your stuff NOW”.

“Back off Lil, I ain't a suspect”.

After Lilly had left and went home, she knew she was making progress in her own personal life. That part was good, especially after having a ladies night with Kat. She liked being out enjoying herself inside of constantly being obsessed with work.

Around midnight Lilly awoke to hear her cell buzzing.
“Rush” sounded halfway
“Lil, I need you. I can’t take this anymore”.

Throwing on a pair of clothes, Lilly practically ran to his apartment.
Scotty sat there holding a bottle of beer in his hand, but it didn’t appear that he had been drinking it.
“My dad used to bring me to a place to fight, but every time I was weak”. He let out a breath” I’m a weak person”.
Lilly took his hand” No you aren’t Scotty, never were”.
He pulled back” Even when you were inside of that house with George, I couldn’t save you then”.
“Remember what I told you, about not being the hero”.
“The first day” added Scotty” I remember, maybe that’s why he was happy when I became a cop”.

Lilly touched his face” You’re a great cop and a good partner”.
“No I SCREWED UP” Scotty yelled smashing his fists on the table” BOSS HAD TO TAKE MY SUSPENSION YET IT WAS MY FAULT”.
She then pushed him onto the couch” I had enough of this, you didn’t screw up. Boss knew you did the right thing in going in and saving me”.
Scotty got up and punched the table repeatedly until feeling a surge of pain. He was breathing hard until, Lilly pushed him down again.
There he sat” Breathe in” she said” I want you to take several strong breaths”.
Obeying he did, as Lilly watched him calming down. She then began to set his fingers that had been broken. After that she placed a cold compress on his forehead, while Scotty lay back.

I think this is the best chapter yet. I can totally see Scotty going bananas because he doesn't think that he's strong enough to protect Lil. (As an aside, a Scotty at the gym scene is something I would love to see on the show...)

Ahem. Moving on. You covered a lot of ground with this update. Kudos!

As Lilly gently placed an icepack gently on his hand, Scotty drew in a deep breath.

“Sorry”

“It’s okay, just hold still” she said.

Using his good hand, he gently stroked her cheek. Lilly felt comforted by that before resting her head on Scotty’s chest. There she heard the sound of his heartbeat; as the two lay there with each other. By the time the morning had arrived, he awoke to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen.

Handing the cup to him, Scotty sat up” Just need to protect you, and I failed”.

Lilly sat down “You’ve always protected and been there for me”.


Leaning closer the two shared a kiss which meant more than words could speak. A little while later, she grew hopeless while watching Scotty boxing. He was in pain due to two broken fingers, but continued to do that wanting to be a stronger person.

“Alright, stop it “Lilly said as Scotty stopped for a minute moaning in pain “Look at me, you aren’t some weak person, not to me”.

He resumed punching the ball harder” No, I can’t let this happen again”.

“We’re cops things like this happen”

Scotty punched harder before wincing in a lot of pain “STOP IT NOW” Lilly yelled loudly before striking him in the face.

He then stopped and looked over his partner who had tears in her eyes; she was ashamed about hitting someone she loved so much.

Without another word, Lilly dropped him off at his apartment before heading back to hers. She was so tired that her body instantly hit the bed. At the same time, so did he as the two detectives drifted off into dreamland.

Early on the next morning, her phone rang softly.
“Sorry” came a familiar voice” I love you” before hanging up.

Lilly yawned as a feeling of warmness was felt through her heart. Snuggling up against the covers she fell back to sleep, knowing that she had someone to love.

Just six months later, Lilly placed a hand on her abdomen while walking down the street. Though she had told him about it, they both agreed not to let this ruin what they had together.

Her partner was now in danger; the killer was after him. The squad had been solving this case for nearly six months, but everything was starting to make a whole lot of sense now. The killer had somehow gotten in Scotty’s mind, trying to convince him that he couldn’t protect his partner. In retrospect he had succeeded, now rushing in headquarters Lilly was going to do everything to solve this case.

One thing she wasn’t going to do was let this guy tear apart their friendship. Then the phone rang as deep fear cursed through her veins.

Scotty got even more protective especially now with Lilly carrying his child. Glancing downward at her abdomen, he knew he had to be strong. Now following Vera out to the field were the killer had dumped a presumed body, the two had been tricked. Feeling a %#$% in his arm, just as Scotty went to inspect it his legs began to buckle before collapsing to the ground.

When Vera stopped running he noticed that Scotty wasn’t there as both Jefferies and Stillman began to search for him. It didn’t take long for Lilly to arrive there before she found the first clue; his badge. Then came the mysterious phone call.

“Standing all alone with that little being inside of you.
Lilly looked around” How did you know that”.
“That dear little thing lying in its warm environment hearing the sound of your breathing and heartbeat”.
“What the hell do you want” she said placing a hand over abdomen.
The voice chuckled” You don’t need him”.

After the call had hung up, Lilly had the number trace. Now still spooked from the phone call, she wondered what it had meant. Feeling a moment of queasiness, she got into the car and drove back to headquarters.

In a dark place, Scotty lay there shirtless as he thought about everything the two had gone through. Now hearing a voice he knew he had to fight in order to survive.

“Why didn’t you save her when Blondie cut her wrists” a voice whispered.

Scotty drew in a deep breath” How the hell did you know that”.
“I’ve been watching you two, gives me a rush”.

He tried to fight but ended up getting hurt by this unknown person” You the killer”?

The man smiled wickedly” No, you’ve been set up. He’s knows how weak of a friend you are” before touching his temple” think about it”.

Somehow Scotty found himself outside again, as he steadied himself on his feet. Not long afterward did Lilly hear that he was in the emergency room. Rushing down there she saw some scratches on his face” You okay”?

He nodded “Just leave me alone Rush” he asked pushing her aside. Even at work the following day, Lilly wondered what his problem was. His mood seemed to worsen when she informed him about going to her sonogram. Holding back the tears, Lilly alone wanted to share that special moment with him.
Upon returning, she shot him a cold hearted look.
“Great what did I do now” he said closing the door behind them.
“You’re forgetting that I have our child growing inside of me”
Scotty didn’t answer” Like I care about it”.
“Maybe I should prevent you from having contact” Snapped Lilly as she turned around. He then slammed his fists on the table” I can’t protect you, what if something happens to it”.
“Thought you said you don’t care” before he threw the chair across the room “I don’t”.

Remaining strong, Lilly stood there after hearing the door slamming shut. Her hand gently rubbed her stomach assuring her child; it was still loved. Hearing the door opening up, Scotty threw a bottle of water across the room.
“Enough” her voice yelled before pinning him up against the way” He’s trying to turn you against me”.
A course of realization came to mind as Scotty let out a breath. He knew he loved and cared about their baby so much. As the two detectives walked out trying not to notice that Kat and Vera were once again kissing; another body had been found along with the man who had abducted Scotty. Turns out he wasn’t the killer; but a wannabe.

During the interrogation, his eyes fixed on Lilly.
“Everyone has weakness; a darkened sea inside of them”
Lilly sat down” Where is he”
The man knew practically nothing about her but wanted that thrill of seeing her moment of weakness. He thieved on that, especially after what the real killer had told him. Then again, he wasn’t going to speak knowing that he was gone to be freed soon after a lack of evidence. That part was true but still wondered why the killer had picked Scotty as the victim.

As Lilly felt her unborn child stirring softly inside, she was beginning to feel different. Maybe it was the yearning of having a baby of her own or the fact that there was someone who truly cared about her. Nevertheless, Scotty was still living over at his place since the two were undecided about living together. Their thought of loosing what they had was etched into each other’s minds.

Getting her keys, Lilly headed downtown to a prenatal yoga class. Meanwhile, Scotty was trying to figure out how out why the killer had picked him. Was it random or did that person see the pain he had been in for awhile? Nevertheless, Scotty knew the victims needed closure and time was running out. Then his phone rang; showing an unknown caller.

“Knocking up your partner, after what she had done for you. Such weakness you have” a voice growled.
Scotty began to write some stuff down trying to determine the motive for the killings.
“You like feeling your face submerged into that cold water”
“Shut it, what is this all about”.
The voice gave an evil laugh before hanging up. Scotty then ran the number again which traced it back to a payphone in 30th street station. As Jefferies and Vera canvassed the place, before finding a note attached to one of the phones reading: Darkened Seas. The meaning of that was odd, but the detectives weren’t about to be fooled by this guy.

By the time that Lilly had gotten home, she made herself comfortable while eating a bowl of ice-cream with the works. Soon after, an empty bowl lay there while the blonde detective slept soundly. In the meantime, Scotty was scratching his head trying to figure out what Darkened Seas was. Glancing over at the clock, he yawned and headed over to Lilly’s apartment.

After battling the heavy rains, Scotty dried himself off before getting into bed. He then kissed Lilly before the loud thunder startled her.

“Go back to sleep” he whispered softly.

Lilly kept her eyes open” Baby’s a little restless” as Scotty lay his head down gently on her stomach. While the two listened to the thunder and rain, they knew that not even the killer could split them. They had been through so much together that it seemed impossible to break that bond. Now gently speaking to their baby, Scotty felt the happiness surging inside of him.

Within minutes, he pressed his lips to her stomach. Now lifting up his head, he lay back onto the pillow beside Lilly.
As another round of loud thunder erupted, Scotty placed his hand on top of hers. He then reached over and held a small box” Will you marry me”
Lilly was at lots of words as she saw a diamond ring sitting in a box, tears began to stream downward. Holding out her hand, Scotty then slipped it on before capturing her lips. To him he had made a promise to always protect his girl forever.

“I will always love you” he whispered as Lilly cried softly out of happiness. That moment was destroyed when the lights went out. Then a loud thud was heard downstairs as Scotty grabbed his gun” Stay here”.
Lilly got hers just for protection, as she kept her ears trained for any usual sounds. Downstairs no one was there except a blood trail leading to the outside. Following it Scotty stood out in the heavy rains as flashes of lightening were seen; but the blood trail then went cold. Going back inside, there was no sign of any blood that was there before.

Scotty rubbed his eyes hoping that this wasn’t just due to a lack of sleeping. When he went upstairs Lilly was fast asleep; which was odd. Falling asleep, Scotty then drifted off hoping it was all due to that.

During the next morning, she finally found something that might explain why.

The words Darkened Seas meant a personal battle; which made perfect sense in meaning that it often in included uncertainly, fear and loneliness. Lilly knew they both had experienced this; but still wondered who this person was and why they were being set up like this?
